The defroster duct in my 63 F100 had completely disintegrated so I bought some duct from Macs. When I took the old duct off, the cardboard tube that the duct connects to at the vent in the top of the dash was also falling apart. Anyone know what that part number would be or where I could get one?
dslice, I just restored the entire heat/defrost system in my red '65 F250. The project started out as a simple core replacement but soon escalated. One of the defroster tubes was torn but I have a parts truck in the guise of a blue
'65 F250 sitting under a canopy just waiting to be picked of it's fruit. Now my red '65 has rubber flanges where it fastens to the dash but the blue '65 had the cardboard units that you describe. I took both defroster tubes out of the blue '65 and used one of the tubes to replace the torn one in the red '65. I drilled and restapled the good tube onto the rubber flange from the red '65. Having worked with both, I would recommend that you try to find the rubber type for a couple of reasons. First, there are a lot of them out there on parts trucks because the rubber holds up to moisture unlike the cardboard units and second, the rubber will hold up to moisture unlike the cardboard units.(Yes, I wrote that twice to make a point). That being said, if you are restoring the truck and are of the opinion that the cardboard units are necessary then give me your contact info and I will send you a picture of the cardboard unit that I have left. If it is correct and you can use it, you can have it if you pay the postage. Steve
Thanks for the advice and offer. If I can find the rubber flanges rather than the cardboard, it certainly sounds like the best option. As for restoring the truck, it currently has a 302 out of a 67 mustang under the hood, so stock isn't nearly as important to me as functional. :-)
There were two different heaters on these trucks, the ductwork and the heater plenum chamber are not the same.
The Ford "Economy" recirculating heater has one defroster duct leading from the heater plenum chamber on the top, the other is on the left (drivers) side of the plenum chamber.
The Ford "Deluxe" heater has the two ducts leading from the top of the plenum chamber, these two ducts are next to each other.
Mine is the Economy version, with one duct out of the top and one out of the side toward the driver. The duct I replaced is the one toward the driver's side.
interesting question here, can the delux core assbly be interchanged for the economy. or is the bolt on pattern the same from econ. to declux. i dont run the 64's and older so i have never had any trouble interchanging parts. dutch
there are only 2 different heater cores I have found...65 and 6 F100 and F250 Fresh Air stand alone, and 61-4 Fresh Air or recirc. heaters use the same one on F,N,NT and T series trucks F100 thru 1100 and N1000. Its also used on 1965 thru 1969 NT850/950("NH" diesel) with recirc. heater.
