Lockers

LAST EDITED ON 24-Sep-01 AT 03:38 PM (EST)[p]Gentlemen,
Climbing around an old logging trail I dropped the front end down in a hole that I could get out of. The left front fell in until the bumper was resting on the ground. This picked my right rear tire off the ground. Not having a limited slip differential in front or back left my 33's spinning freely. The "soup" in the hole had such a hydraulic lock on my front end it took a 12,000lb winch and a stout tree with a jeep in the middle to pull me out. I think if I had true 4 wheel drive I could have gotten out when it first happened. As I drive this truck to work as well as play I need some advice on what type of locker to install in my differentials. I would like to be able to lock the front as well as the rear. Any advice would be appreciated.

They are the more expensive way to set up 4x4 but like you I drive my truck everyday so having fully posi truck would be a pain. I have done alot of reading and I do mean alot because of the price, but I'm going to go with the air lockers. They can be controlled from in the cab and you can choose front rear or both to have locked in. This to me seems like a very good set-up and I'm looking forward to the purchase.

I have a 71 f100 4x4 and am installing an ox locker in the front of my dana 44 and a detroit locker in my 9" out back. After all my research (and believe me 5yrs of it)I've decided this to be the best for my truck.I suggest you research it all the applications for your truck and take your time...things get cheaper with time.

Although it isn't a selectable locker, I would strongly recommend getting a Detroit Locker. I don't think anyone can argue with the fact that it is the strongest, most dependable locker on the market.

I second the Detroit Locker. The difference on the trail is amazing. Its strong and well worth the cost, definately the best money I've spent on my truck. Like in your situation, with a tire off the ground, the other one will just keep pushing or pulling wherever you want to go. And dont listen to people who say they are hard to drive with on the street.

Even though i dont have one, i would strongly recommend a selectable locker such as an ARB or the new Eaton E-Locker. this way you have the same street ride, but great off road performance at the flick of a switch.
