Well, I've been away for a while but have a problem that I can't figure out. If I'm in park or drive, doesn't matter, I get a vibration that comes for 1 sec then goes away for 1 sec and keeps repeating. It only happens at idle. I'm kind of concerned but I have had it ever since I bought the truck, just it is getting annoying. No stumbling at idle or anything, although I do have a knock (probably cackle) that comes and goes depending on humidity and elevation.
Sounds like the tc to me. Mine does it as well. It bugs me too. My original tranny did it and so does the new one. After a lot of research and being in other powerstrokes I've come to believe they all do it to some degree.
I get it too. It's done it since it had around 25K mi. That was 6yrs and many miles ago. So far, all is well. I just figured I'd chime in and let you guys know there are others.
Thats good to know there are others with this. Today though, I noticed idling through the parking lot, i heard a light grinding/scrubbing noise. I put the truck in park and flipped my tc lock switch and there was a wobbly grinding noise. I took the inspection cover off and the flex plate is good and the bolts are all tight. No cracks. The noises are definately coming from the TC area. I also noticed the tc lockup is harsh under less than full throttle only around 40mph. Full throttle and it doesn't lockup hard... Am I in trouble?? Sorry for the long post haha...
Personally I'd get it to a good tranny shop and have them diagnose it. I had a few little issues with mine that I ignored such as this and then all of the sudden BAM!! and it blew. Oh, and I do mean BAM! It was loud. Just my .02 and I'm one of those guys mystefied by the auto tranny.
I try to stay away from shops, but this will be one time I suppose I'm going to need to go to one. Just seeing if anyone has heard or had this problem... Thanks for the replies! To the tranny shop; hopefully it just is a noisy converter that lasts me a long time... we will see!
My neighbor has the noisiest converter I have ever heard on his and it rattles something awful. Been doing it for 5 years now and he wont fix it. I guess you never know. I'm with you about going to shops, but sometimes it's gotta be done.
Ironically, I called Brian yesterday and had a nice conversation with him. He thinks it is the converter bolts loose, or cracked flywheel. I checked both, and they look good, so from there, he said its probably internal... I will get a clip of the noise after my appt at the 2nd tranny shop. 1st said all he heard was a turbo haha...
Well, I must be crazy, because the 2nd person said it shifts fine, and the shift/lockup from 3 to OD is hard because it is locking the converter and shifting at the same time... The clip makes it really hard to hear...my camera liked the diesel noise more than the chattering haha... I am controlling the chatter... I have the tc lock switch on, then rev it, then lock it and unlock it...
