Need HELP with diagnosis

I have looked in the search and found alot of information and trying to put some kind of order to were i want to start. 160,000 miles dp tuner , blue cps.Everything has been fine for about a year unti the other day when the ses light kept coming on , would clear while runnig than on again , was not running hard , just crusing along .truck stalled at a stop ,restarted ses cleared than came back on . Oil was low so I just changed oil , filter , and fuel filter and ran a tank of diesel fuel with deisel clean added. After that ran fine for about 10 minutes and ses light came on cleared, came back on and theen stalled out at a stop once again. Throttle rpms surge at times 200 rpms , and has at times what I would call a miss . My next thing is to replace the cps with the black one ( B ) . What do you all think ?

thats where i would start, if you can get a good shop to scan what codes you had , it might help a lot. cause now we shooting blind.
but cps would be a good starting point.

I'm no diesel expert, but, I am thinking that you should pull the codes and then we'll go from there.

If you're going to throw parts at it, I'd throw a gray CPS in there for $30 as a test. If that fixes it, you can spend the money on another blue (or black) one. If not, you're only out $30, and it will still work for a spare to keep in the glove box.

Your best bet would be to get the codes pulled and see what they have to tell you. Otherwise we'll just be throwing your money around.

Edit: It's one thing to reply to a thread with 0 responses and end up with 3 posts in front of me, but I'm thinking Pete is just rubbing it in by posting twice before I can finish typing. Nice work Pete.

Check the wires going over the valve cover on the drivers side sometimes they rub through! Also the wire connectors under the valve cover, maybe coming apart! Also check for codes, if the light came on it stored a code!!

Like Pete (& everyone else that types faster than me) said, need to pull the codes and start troubleshooting from there. There are plenty of guys in MD on this forum - should be able to hook up with one that has a scanner or Auto Enginuity.......

Sorry about that I forgot to put that in there , stopped by the local mechanic shop were I know a buddy there and used his Mac code scanner and it showed NO CODES FOUND I kind of thought that with the ses light going on and off as much as it did that I would of had something , also I was under the valve covers back in February and everything was good then , but I know that does'nt mean that something could'nt be going on now , my luck. Maybe the code reader was wrong , he said they use it all the time , maybe there not getting the info they need either.

fd1109,

Sorry to hear about your troubles.

Definately read those codes to see what it is. The mac should be able to read diesel codes. Have you had your battery's unhooked since this happened. If you have it has cleared them out.

Also check to see what the ICP pressures are. Kinda sounds like low icp pressures.

Diane

The wires on top of the valve covers can cause the CEL to flash. The only code it will leave is the P0603 (keep alive memory) since a short to ground here causes the PCM to reset.

Injector Control Pressure. With the right diagnostic software tool you can monitor your ICP....seeing if it is out of ordinary causing you idle to jump around/surge....

ICP is the Injection Control Pressure sensor. It has to do with the high pressure oil that is used to fire the fuel injectors. 21 MPG sounds like you've either got a sensor acting up, or a wire shorting out somewhere, since the fuel economy hasn't been affected. I hate intermittent electrical / sensor related issues. They're a pain to track down.

The ICP sensor is a round looking thing located on the front inboard side of the drivers head. If you unplug the electrical connector, you can check for any signs of oil there. Oil in the connector is a sign of a bad connector. This commonly throws a P1211 code, and sometimes results in a no start condition.
