How to TEST lift pump?

Can anyone offer a simple way to "TEST" the lift pump? and recommend another one if it requires replacing? Rough cost? I have searched the forums but found nothing that clearly explains it.

Thanks,

its cheap,about 150$ i think.

Why do you think you need a lift pump?

BTW its an electronic lift pump, on the frame rail.

Yes I know... I look in the filter bowl and had my buddy turn the key on, the volume is very low as to how much fuel is coming in. I also have heard strange noises coming from it for the past while. I have another problem that leads me to believe I am getting fuel starvation under serious load that I have been looking for feedback on.

Can anyone suggest the best way to test it?

Check for voltage at the pump to make sure that you are getting the full 12V to it. On a DC motor the lower the voltage the slower it goes.

Good advice on a starting point, but how do I test the pump iteself? IE Pressure? Etc...

You can hook a gauge to the fuel bowl to read pressure. You'd also need to disconnect the pump from the tank and add a short hose into a bucket of diesel and check the pressure that way too to rule out the clogged screen possibility.

If you had a buddy with a 7.3 you could just try his fuel pump on your truck to see what that did.

well the pressure gauge might be fine while your truck is idling, but the volume might be not as good.best way to test it would be to have scanner, or the gauge inside the cab, cause you can watch you fuel press going up and down.
if you want a real test get a large CLEAN bucket, disconnect you fuel pump outlet out a hose on it and secue it in the bucket. have somone turn the key on while you keepin an eye on the bucket and hose, good pump should almost have stream like good garden hose.
those are identical pumps like Audi uses, if it makes lots of noise its going bad.

i have one of those pumps laying around, i might just get a gallon or two of bio and see how fast they pump, unless somone knows GPH on stock pumps?

BTW:
check inlet screen in the pump, and intank screen and connections, you might be sucking air in.....

Perfect! Thanks everyone, I will start with the easy steps and work my way up... When watching the fuel come into the bowl, it comes in quite slowly... Seems to do a little bit better than dribble into the bowl.
I suspect the pump is toast, but will check the pump disconnected from the tank before I completely write it off... I read something about guys getting 61psi or something? Is there a minimum pressure I should be seeing if I connect a guage to the bowl?
I'll update with my results in the next week or so...

Was the fuel filter still in the bowl? There is a plunger, in the stand pipe, that will not let the fuel flow out (unless it was removed) with the filter out.The filter pushes the plunger down to allow the fuel to enter the bowl. Just a thought.

According to the Airtex fuel pump website, the stock pump is 35-45 gph @ 95-110 psi. This would be unregulated, straight from the pump outlet.

The filter was out, however the inlet appears to have no plunger that could be effected by the filter being installed... As mentioned, the fuel was coming into the bowl, however it was only dribbling in, not really shooting in like I thought it should. I will run some pressure tests and update here with my results... Thank you everyone for the great feedback...

The spring loaded plunger is inside the fuel stand pipe. You can press it down, from the top, with a small screwdriver when the filter is out. Look at the top of the stand pipe and will see it. The plunger will move down to allow fuel to come out of the windows in the stand pipe near the top. I removed the stand pipe and took out this plunger during my last filter change. This plunger is explained in the Powerstrokehelp/ youtube.com videos posted a few weeks ago.
