Exhaust

Hey Guys,
need some input here. I noticed that the stock muffler is starting to rust out.
The truck is an early 99 PSD and is stock other than the 6637 filter mod, ccv mod and the upgraded headlight wiring mod. I don't haul or tow with this truck.
My question is: Is there any benefit to upgrading the exhaust or should I leave it stock? How about the Cat converter? I live in Washington and need to have emmission testing done periodically. When I change out the exhaust can the cat be omitted?
Thanks in advance

An upgraded turbo back exhaust can benefit you. Lower EGT's, better breathing engine. Not sure about the cat question. Don't have one on my truck.

Cut the muffler off- cheapest way to straight pipe your exhaust.

Walker BTM (big truck muffler)-this would just take the place of your old muffler, but with the straight through design will give you better whistle and lower egt's.

Cat BACk Exhaust-from the cat back

Turbo back exhaust- from the turbo eliminates cat converter.

It really depends if you want to go for style and get duals, or go with performance and get a 4" exhaust system, or just go big and do the 5" deal. Can even do stacks. Its really up to you what you want. I really like the 5" MBRP exhaust i have on my truck, however i really like the look of dual stacks. with any way you go you will lower your egt's, pick up a little mpg (not much), and make your truck sound awesome. what's your budget look like for this project? cuz that is a major factor as well...good luck

If it were me, I'd do a 4" turbo back and say bye-bye kitty. You don't need the cat, and the guy doing emissions testing won't know it had one to begin with (most PSD's don't have a factory cat, just the early birds and Cali/Canada models). I put 4" turbo back duals on mine from Diamond Eye that I bought from Diesel Power Products right in Spokane. If you want duals I'd suggest MBRP, Diamond Eye's fit was not the greatest. Or if you don't care about duals, buy a single 4" and save yourself a ton of $ (which is what I probably should have done...) Give DPP a call, they were super helpful when I was dealing with them, they are local for you, and they are a site sponsor... can't go wrong!

I just put exhaust on my truck. I got a 4" DP from MBRP then froma local truck shop got about 7' of 4" pipe and a 4" elbow and brought it out in front of the rear tire. It's not fancy or pretty but it was cheap. About 100-150 dollars overall. Pics are in my gallery.

There was writing on the pipe so I took some header paint, like an aluminum color and covered it and covered the welds too so it looks pretty good now. I think biohzrdman painted his whole exhaust.

Did you need a tube bender for your homemade exhaust?

I imagine once he came out of the downpipe, he'd went straight back and used the elbow to curve the pipe out before the wheel.

I just took the straight pipe right off the downpipe and ran it back then used a 45* to turn it out in front of the wheel.

I got a 4" MBRP Turbo back with tip for $312 shipped. Very easy install. I have noticed a 1-1.25 MPG gain with just this.
