I've never done it as a habit. I brush once a day (after breakfast), and have never had a cavity. I even went 12.5 years without seeing a dentist. I had to go this year to break that streak because a wisdom tooth was bothering me and I got it pulled. The dentist told me some people just have strong enamel.
My wife, on the other hand...has a very expensive mouth.
i started flossing everyday about 2 months ago,30 years of age.....hopefully its not to late, also i have a habit of only seeing the dentist when somethigs wrong...which is a bad thing to do....hence, i have 2 porcelin crowns in my mouth...about 2k each.....they could have only been fillings if i went to the dentist.
ben is right,it is more important than brushing............but some people can smoke 2 packs a day for 50 years and have no problems either
I dont floss, and i brush once a day. The last time I went to a dentist they told me the same thing they told me 15 years ago, you should be flossing and you brush to hard.
Ive had one filling when i was pretty young, and it fell out and got replaced by an adult tooth.
Ive tried to get into flossing but my hands are just to big for my mouth (who woulda thought that!) Ive tried those throw away flossers with the handle on them, but that got old pretty quick.
Its something i know I should try to get into but havent.
the root cause of mouth diseases, cavaties, and bad breath...lack of flossing
if your breath is bad,and you lack on flossing.......take somthing very small and slide it between your teeth and up against your gums....pull it out and smell it.
Once a year at the dentist.
They ask me why I don't floss and I tell them my teeth are too tight. They smile smugly and say "we'll see about that"
10 minutes later after grunting and sweating and making my gums bleed like I been sucker punched by Mike Tyson, they grudgingly say "oh I see what you mean".
But they still give me floss and I tell them I'll floss again next year when i see them again.
I know I should do it, but my teeth really are crowded. Should probably have had braces as a kid, bu that was in the 60's and only rich people could afford braces then, I guess. It really is hard to get between any of my teeth and I quit after one or two tries.

Actually, I have. I am just too cheap to break down and buy one. The dentist has actually recommended it. I think to myself, that is a good idea!
But then i never follow through because I assume they are too expensive.
I probably ought to price them so i can make an informed decision rather than a gut reaction decision.
I had terrible teeth when I was a kid (no fluoride, and please nobody hijack the thread about the good or bad of fluoride. I just know it worked great for my kids) and have a mouth full of amalgam. Broke one of my molars and have a crown, but haven't had a new cavity in 20 years. Just old fillings falling out.
I am going to look in to a water pick. I swear I will.
Thanks Sierraben.
PS I flash to that scene in GBU every time I see your avatar. "You know what you are, Blondie???? You're a son of a 'wahahaha, wawawa'............"
You guys who don't floss and then brag that you dont get cavities are totally missing the boat. You are putting yourself at risk for tooth loss due to gum disease later in life. Periodontal disease usually is painless and has few signs (except bleeding gums) until it reaches the advanced stage. By that time, it has destroyed the bone supporting the roots of the teeth and it may be too late to save some of your teeth. If you brush and floss your teeth tonight and have blood in the sink when you are done, you are at risk for tooth loss. Forget the Water Pik. It is great for flushing out loose food particles, but the bacteria in the mouth form a sticky plaque film along the gum line, which must be mechanically removed via brush and floss. In addition to tooth loss, the bacteria in the mouth and below the gum line have recently been associated with heart disease, due to the inflammation present.

Water Pik at Wal-Mart is under $35. Shoots small but powerful precise stream of water wherever you aim it. Gets between teeth and is great for removing food particles from your teeth. Works much better for me than flossing!
