Infamous P0304 code showed up on my F150 yesterday. Wow the web is littered like ships on the ocean floor with information about this code. I am in the process of trying to test the ignition coil as my fabulous "Chilton" manual explains. However where is the ignition coil? The manual has no photo's only an electrical diagram. I have confusion as to if one even exist on this 1998 F150 2x4 4.6L V8 135,000 miles. Since the 4.6L contains coil packs is the "ignition coil" contained inside this component or elsewhere? Thanks to anyone whom can lend a helping word.
NEBFRD thanks for the reply. Yes I cleaned the spark plug wire minimally today with no change. I will try again now that I have a better tool for cleaning the contact inside of the boot. All 8 spark plugs were changed 6 months ago with NGK Iriduim plugs, so my guess is the plugs are fine. However I will check the #4 plug if the troubleshoot on wire and coil pass. I believe the #4 cylinder is suffering from the heater hose leak problem others have experienced. Red Rest colored residue has accumulated around the spark plug wire rubber boot.
Cleaned the spark plug boot and placed dielectric grease inside the spark plug boot. Truck runs fine now. My guess is water from the heater hose is leaking down and boiling off on contact with the engine. Then the steam travels up the boot and condenses inside the boot causing the moisture problem. Next problem is to find the heater hose leak. Any suggestions on the pressure test to find the leak? Should I rig up a bicycle hose to a spare radiator cap and pump for leaks?
