Guys, I am going for all the fuel economy I can get, and I want to index the spark plugs. I have an inline 6, and I haven't found a picture of the inside of the head to see whereabouts the intake ports are.
Besides fuel economy, the motor vibrates, although it sounds smooth and the tach doesn't fluctuate. ...shakes the gearshift on the 5 speed about a half inch to either side. I really want to smooth that out.
In the morning I am going to make sure all the plugs are gapped correctly and see if that makes a difference. I don't know how old the coil is or if that makes a difference. The last time I indexed spark plugs was about 15 years ago on a small block dodge, but I think it is time. I remember it smoothed things out even more and gave me better performance.
New duralast gold cap from Autozone. Plug wires were a Christmas present this year. If checking the gaps on the plugs doesn't smooth things out some, even if it does, doing a bleed down check on the cylinders soon. Head has about 20k miles on it. Can't remember what brand the plugs or wires were, but have some 8.5 mm MSD wire and components coming in, should be tomorrow new wiring harness by Wednesday.
Check your motor mounts. If they're on their way out or bad they may cause your problem.
These old trucks really like the OEM stuff, stick with Motorcraft brand ignition parts.

Thanks again

dump the auozone cap.
checking gaps and indexing are two different things.
I agree Jason, I was going to suggest taking a nap or reading a good book or cruise the net, instead of wasting time on the indexing deal, its one of those hot rod magazine catch phrases that some think really mean something.
Okay guys, if you say so. I was looking at things just now, and it is going to be kinda hard to see the lines on the plugs showing me where the dang thing is pointing with everything already installed on the motor.
and der.... for some reason I didn't check the motor mounts. gonna get to that after work.
speaking of which, time to pay some bills
later.
