Maybe just a bad sender...but the gauge is a glorified idiot light. If it's not up over halfway, I'd start worrying about the engine real quick.
Make sure the oil is fresh, is at a safe level in the motor, and not leaking out...if the engine isn't making funny sound, I'd blame the sender, wiring, and/or the gauge.
