1940 voltage regulator connections

My dad has a original 1940 ford flathead truck. Several years ago a new wiring harness was installed. It is still the 6volt system, after starting truck and running for a while the truck will not re-start after stopping, it cranks really slow, the wiring to the voltage regulator was right according to the schematic that came with the wiring, but the in dash gauge allways showed the voltage way to the right. Looking at a old chiltons manual this weekend I changed the 3 wires at the regulator, the truck started and the gauge in the truck was staying more in the middle reflecting (normal) charge.
But truck would not re-start!!!
Battery has been exchanged several times because of warranty.

What is the correct wiring for the regulator standing at the grill looking at the fire-wall ?
Thanks for your time Marty

marty, left- armature, middle-field, right-battery. did you polarise regulator? with ignition off, touch field wire to battery post on regulator, this will polarise regulator. connections should be stamped on generator. make sure wiring is good, gets brittle after awhile. make sure ground cable is clean and tight on block. should have ground strap from block to cab or frame, sometimes rusts out or gets knocked loose. check starter connections, should get her working ok.
