351W needs 30 degrees advance to run right. Could the timing chain be off?
I bought a partially assembled 351W motor and the timing cover was already installed. I have had it in my truck for a while but the motor has no power and knocks at low idle. The tranny has been rebuilt and even had my mechanic neighbor try everything to get it running better. The motor runs at its best with 30 degrees of advanced timing and it only gets a best of 10 vaccum and any timing.
The motor is in a completly restored 1984 F-350 4x4 C-6 with 4.10's and 35" tires. If I cannot get more power out of this motor so I can stay with or pass my friends 97 Z71, I will have to swap to a 460 4spd manual combo.

Yes, Your timing chain may be one or two cogs out. I have had plenty of experience with 351w's. I have one in my car with a 750 holley, hedman hedders, dual exhaust and straight pipes. God it is cool liv9ing in canada with only a few regulations.

Thanks for the reply.
It is definitly nice that they got rid of emission testing around here.
By the way the motor has a mild RV cam and a 600 or 650 holley( I forget which one), eldelbrock intake and shorty headers.

When you go trying to outrun your buddy, don't forget that those big tires are gonna slow you down, so don't condemn an engine too soon until you know that it is at it's full potential.
