255/85R16 vs 285/75R16?

So I'm looking at tires, as I've mentioned on here, and have been kind of turned on to the Cooper Discoverer S/T (Nice deep tread, been told it's good in snow, and a pretty good price).

I noticed they have these tires in 255/85R16 as well as the size I had originally been looking at, 285/75R16.

Has anyone here ever run 255/85R16's? I know they're fairly narrow, and I have 8" wide wheels to mount them on so I don't even know how well they'd work. I was just thinking they might be nice in terms of helping fuel mileage a bit, but if they're gonna suck on an F250 I won't bother with them.

a 285/75 is about a 33x10.50 tire. IMHO, anything narrower would look stupid. Im very biased on this because I like wide tires regardless of application

I actually have the ST 255/85s on my 01. They look great from the side being 33 inches tall, but yeah, as STG said, they look a little goofy from the front or rear being narrow.

I have 38,500 miles on mine and I will hit 40K then replace them. They are about 15-18% tread left....rotated religiously. They don't have that wallowy, floaty feeling when hauling (being a Load Range D tire) my 6 horse trailer that other (wider) load range D tires have.

Snow, yes, they are good. Hard pack or ice....kiss your tail goodbye!! They aren't noisy and they have worn really well on my PSD. If I could afford another set of new tires, I would definitely get them again.

The bad part about the 285's is that they will cost you a little mileage wise due to the width and wind/road rolling resistance.

They would look goofy on an 8 inch wide wheel....if you could even get the beads to seat!!

Hope this helps.

Hm. No good on packed snow eh?

Hell, is there anything that is?

That almost makes them sound more like a mud tire...
