can anyone help me solve my steering issues?

i was looking into crossover for my 97 f350, but was told it would never work with a balljointed front end.

my stock steering setup sucks. its very weak turning 38's and its very 'hissy'. my truck wanders all over the road, and has recently developed a very nasty shake if i get the wheel turned in the right spot while making a sweeping turn on road.

im wondering what i can do, besides buying a kingpin d60 for the front to install the crossover setup on. new box? new pump? anyone have any suggestions for me?

i dont wanna buy a new front axle cause i just got mine rebuilt with new gears like 2 weeks ago. is there a way i can buy a kingpin 'outer assembly' and just weld the whole thing onto my existing axle tubes, or is that just silly?

No, its two entirely different outer C/knuckle assys. Dont quote me on this but I would imagine in theory you could cut off the BJ Cs and weld on KP Cs with the appropriate knuckles. The question is WHY?

I dont have experience with the later axles. Maybe fishy or some of the others can help you better there. I can tell you that with a KP 60 saginaw ps pump and 38s steering/road handling is awsome.

My buddy has had a similar problem on his 95 F-350. Turns out that it is similar to the problem you had with your older D60 there Kris. With the larger tires, the extra stress put on the ball joints made them act like they were worn out when he would have the wheel turned just right coing around a turn. We went through and replaced the upper and lowers, put a set of bilstein 5100 shocks (because this is his work truck and doesn't see much off road time), and made sure all the bushings were in good shape. Problem fixed, and hasn't been back. So on that note, just becasue your front was recently rebuilt, you may want to check the rest of the parts, like shocks, spring bushings, tie rod ends, etc.

you dont wanna buy the inner C's just for that project! mucho work! what some have done is mill the top of the knuckle down just enough to drill and tap holes thus allowing you to bolt an arm on top of the pass side knuckle. i know the 44's offer this option, never seen one for the 60 but i'm sure it could be done. that is if all you are doing is trying to get the steering on top of the knuckle.

also i just so happen to know where a pair of KP knuckles are sitting if you happened to come up with a pair of inner c's you would have you a setup! in fact i have a good bit of hardware to go along with the knuckles

alright...so im really at a dead end here. i do work in a place where i could get some hefty discounts on brand new inner C's...but thats probably gonna rack me up alotta money.

i could try the new bushings in the steering. my shocks are less than a year old, and my ball joints are coming up on a year. they were checked and greased when the axle was rebuilt.

would it be worth trying a new pump out? ive seen ones in jegs that are supposed to be reman'd to be better than stock for liek 250 bucks. think its worth it?

I dont think its uncommon for 38s to wear a set of BJs out in a year.

Yeah jegs sell upgraded pumps but I dont think that will solve your problem. A earlier style saginaw pump would work just as good for half the money but again I dont think that will solve your problem.

Im at a loss otherwise.

The factory D60 ball joint front end has been running 40" and 42" rubber since it was new. It has had a crossover for quite a while, and the ball joints never seem to be a problem.

Once the unit bearings were replaced, 35 spline outers, and new front hubs installed the front end has been just fine.
