I have a 1987 F-350 5.8L 351W. Previous owner replaced the motor with an exact replacement but fouled up all the emission and vacuum hose routing. Does anybody know of a publication that shows in picture or diagram form the original configuration of these parts? Even a digital photo of identical engine compartment would help! The sticker on the fan shroud is still discernable but impossible to dicipher.
Thanks all!
Does your engine have a place for the vacuum line going to the distributor?
I am assuming your truck has a stock holley 4 barrel carb? Does it have a smog pump?
P.S. In case everybody is wondering why I am replying to this old thread, a person PM'd me about it(see below). I will try to direct him here so we can all talk about it.
Great! Can you check out this link. I'm trying to find the exact same info as this guy. You responded to it but your response is blank. Do you happen to remember what you posted?
I know its a long shot, but I've done a few searches and this is the closest I've been able to come to finding a vacuum hose routing for a 351W out of an 87 F-150.
I'm very new to Fords especially carburated motors in general. Yes I do believe its the holley. It does have a vacuum line to the dist but I'm guessing it has a smog pump. Would it be on the top of the motor on the passenger side?
Yes, usually the smog pump is on the passenger side above the alternator. It has large pipes running to it.
I really do not know what to tell you except to possibly get a new sticker from the Ford dealer. I do not have access to any diagrams with your truck's configuration. You could possibly buy the diagrams from www.helminc.com if they still have them.
What is your goal here? To make it run better because it has a problem? Or do you want it back completely original? Are the inspection stations giving you a hard time? Or you just want to get it cleaned up and running good, whether all the lines are hooked up or not?
Right now, everything is hooked up and the truck ran pretty well before the head gaskets went south. I'm getting ready to tear the top of the motor apart and instead of trying to mark every line and/photograph it all, I just want to replace it all with new lines. The original lines are quite brittle and I'd prefer to just replace them all.
I guess I was just hoping to take the easy way out and find a diagram I can work off instead of just marking it all. There are so many I just figured it would be easier to start over rather than work from what I already have.
It is tedious, but the best way is to mark them. Masking tape and a pen will work. If you have a diagram, it's still hard to figure out whats what, with all the different devices and abbreviations.
Thanks for your help Dave! I really appreciate it. I guess the 2nd reason I was looking for a diagram was just to make sure while I have it all apart, that all of the vacuum lines are running to the correct places. After nearly 20 years of being worked on, I just want to make sure nothing has been hooked up incorrectly.
