I have searched this section with no clear cut answers, so I am going to ask again sorry for asking. I am trying to decide between a new 6.4 and a slightly used 6.0 and one of the questions I have is what fuel mileage are you guys seeing with the 6.0?? I really want to buy my very first NEW truck but I like the look of the 06 / 07 Harley version. I see by some of the info I could get on my search that you guys are seeing alot better mileage, is this correct? The big plus is staying away from the DPF on the 6.4. Any information would be great.
A very good rule to live by is to NEVER buy a first year production vehicle.... give 'em at least a year to get the wrinkles out (2 to 3 years in the case of the 6.0).
Making broad generalizations always carries its risks, but.....
The 6.0 seemed to pretty much have its act together in the '05 and later trucks, though some tunes/chips still caused problems.
So far, the major complaint about the 6.4 has been poor (and I mean REALLY poor) fuel economy.
I agree with Kepler -- what are your needs for the new truck -- do you need a diesel? (#2 just hit $4.28 here) That said, we love our '07, but of the current emissions compliant trucks, I'd only buy the Ford. Read up on what they are doing emissions-wise versus the others.
There are fewer and fewer complaints on the 6.0s the later you go in builds...
There are things that the 6.4 definately has over the 6.0, but I wouldn't trade what I have for a 6.4(and I've been in Matt's and that was a pretty good truck) and it has already been mentioned I just don't feel it's a good idea to get a new engine platform until it's been out in the world for a couple of years. Now just because it's a new engine doesn't mean that it's not good, but it just seems like the new ones(no matter what the engine is) there are bugs in there.

I wouldn't trade yours either. You have a nice setup there, but you've put some $$$ into it. Have you removed the EGR?
I really have heard or experienced little in the way of problems with the 6.4. There was the flamethrower tailpipe that was fixed in the very first ones. The thing where 3 injectors got tested in reverse polarity and that should be covered in a TSB, and the radiator leaking problems with the very first ones. (We have experienced that and it was fixed ASAP)
Anyhow the one thing that the 6.4 does that was promised on the 6.0 and then taken back that I like a lot is the pilot injection. Oh a love a quiet diesel.
yup. 04, getting around 15 in town, 18 or 19 hwy. depending on the trailer/load, i'll see anywhere from 11 to 13, usually pulling a 20' gooseneck loaded to around 10K. get in the wind and it goes down some, maybe 10 to 15%, never checked too much on that.
plus i like the looks of the older body style anyway, esp the 05-07. i say why not? they can be found in the neighborhood for 25K, what's to complain about with that???
I only need to tow a car trailer and fifth wheel travel trailer about 24 times a year total and hauling some stuff in the bed like firewood and building materials. the fifth wheel is too much for the F150 so I need to change my signature. I bought a 36 foot trailer. Thanks for the input so far.
how much wt is your travel trailer? and what kind of terrain (seriously, i have no idea what WA has got). there's a kid at school with a 1/2T dodge hemi who's pulling a 3 horse gooseneck and no problems but it's pretty much all flat out here...
