Well i apparenlty the noise my explorer was making wasn't a synchronizing gear... turns out it was the transmission. It went out tonight on the way home from work. Just wandering what the cost is for a new transmission for a 96 Explorer, v6 automatic... and if its worth it to put a new one in, or buy a new car...

i would check with a local trans shop. depends on location and going rates, but transmisisons are in the $800-1000 range, and installation can be the same.

When the transmission on my 91 XLT went I got quotes from several shops here in Oregon. They ranged from $1000 to $1800. This is the A4LD model automatic trans which may be different than yours. I had it done for about $1400 at a shop where I trusted the guy and he had been doing business in the same place for >20 years. It has been trouble free since (>20k miles). Some of the shops (like the $1000 guy) seemed very flakey so I didn't go low bid. Turns out that guy is now out of business so I'm glad I chose to go elsewhere.

By the way to clarify my previous post, the prices given were to rebuild my transmission and included parts and labor.

I would look for a shop that will rebuild your transmission, as opposed to swapping a reconditioned tranny in. A lot of the companies that rebuild them just replace the soft parts, and pressure test them. A qualified shop on the other hand will actually diagnose, and replace the soft parts, and any hard parts that are needed. And they test drive them to make certain that they actually work. And you don't get any mystery transmission that may have already been rebuilt x number of times. I would think it is probably worth your while to fix yours unless the vehicle has other major problems. I spent almost $3000 rebuilding my tranny, but for me it was worth it because I have an excellent engine, plus the body was in good shape. Cheaper to get it fixed than to buy another mystery vehicle that may or may not have the same problem or other issues.
