I forgot to mention that my X has the electrically operated moon roof so the console is short.
I've found the answer to my question! There are two of the usual spring clips holding the console up at the front end, by the windscreen whilst the back end has a piece of plastic going under the edging trim around the moon roof opening. If you ease this trim backwards a bit away from the console (it has some sticky goo on it) you can pull the console down at the front and ease it out of the edging trim at the back.
All the wires needed are availble to tap into.
