I posted this in the SD forum without a single reply, A few questions that I need answering before I order.
Gear swap on my 99 250 4X4 from 3.73 to 4.56. I don't haul or two much so these sound about rite. But just to make sure of what I need:
(1) Front Dayna 50, is there only one cut gear for a 50? No straight cut or reverse cut??
(2) Rear 10.50, from what I can find you use a 10.25 and change the pinion bearings to make it work... Does this sound correct?? No site lists a 10.5 gear only a 10.25 for all 10.50s with the bearing kit...
(3) Does the rear come gears only and then you have to buy a pinion bearing kit to make a 10.25 work or does it come as a whole kit
I take it that the Sterling 10.25 and 10.5 differentials are interchangable but not the ring/pinion sets. The place above has everything you need Ring/Pinions, Master Overhaul kits, Posis/Lockers and etc. I would give them a call, they can get you set up.

I have already checked with them along with 2 other sites, basically what they tell me the 10.25 needs a "bearing kit" to make it work.. Still don't know if you must purchase a bearing kit seperately or what. It is hard for me to believe that after I buy a gear set I MUST buy a bearing kit when all other vehicles made don't need any rigging up!!! I just wanted some feedback from someone here who has done a gear swap already but I keep getting "check with vendor" responces...
Just did my 00 F250 4x4, Went from 3:73 to 4:30 love it, I pull a 30' 5er with it. To answer you question is the 10.25 will work you will have to replace the inner pinion bearing, You replaced it with a 1998 or older bearing, that is the only thing you have to replace everything will work. I paid $550 for the gears and $600 to have them replaced.

Why wouldn't your next question be: "Do you carry that bearing kit, and how much?"
Me, I'd almost never replace just the ring and pinion without changing the bearings too - especially the small front pinion bearing that is notoriously NOT a Timken bearing (whereas the rest are).
When I've bought a ring-and-pinion set, they never come with bearings.
As for the Dana 50, it's a reverse cut, because it's the front with a high pinion. They never (I don't think) used a Dana 50 in the rear, so there's no "normal" cut.
If you open anything that has bearings on a '99, I'd replace them. Might as well. But anytime you have differential work done you should change them, because you won't have it open again until something fails, and why have it be bearing failure because you didn't change them when you had the chance.
When you call Randy's they should tell you everything you need, or might need if you let them know what you want to do.
If you don't want a "check with vendor" response, how about checking with the shop that's going to do the install?

The Dana 50 seems to be only front I just wanted to make sure there was no normal and reverse cut...
I did check on prices for bearing kits and they were same price as the gears! I just had both front and rear out checking bearings and changing oil. Both front and rear look like brand new! I did a 100% check of the entire truck at the shop I run.
And I will be doing the gear swap but have never done a SD 10.5 only Dana 60s and 80s. No other gear I have ever done has said go with a smaller gear and put different bearings in it! Seems chicken **** to me... But I think I have all my answers now so I can order. Thanks guys
