Hey guys, I have read the board off and on but this is my first post. I have a 79 Bronco Custom that I am doing a full frame-off resto on. I have been working on it for almost 2 years now and am nearing completion. I just got my 400 back about a week ago and wanted to share it with you guys. Here are some pics.

Hello - in the 400 buildup article I saw, it says that this cam allows pressure to build as if you have 11.5:1 compression. Any thoughts from anyone about using this cam in a 351C that has the Aussie heads and actual compression ratio of 10.7:1? I plan to polish the combustion chambers to help avoid detonation, and do not want to put a cam in that only makes it worse. I would appreciate input from someone who knows cams. Thanks!
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 28-Mar-02 AT 12:42 PM (EST)]Beartracks, what was your hp and tq numbers, I am trying to get a ballpark figure to what I can expect with my setup.
These are from desk top dyno and I believe the HP should be a little higher as it revs a little higher than shown. Torque is flat from 2000 rpm where the chart begins to about 4000 and still making 400 at the 5500 rpm shift point. That fat old roller cam really kicks out the grunt.
I'll check your web site.
Faster horses, older whiskey, younger women, and more beer!
Double Agent. You have some nice images on your web site. I book marked it for reference on parts. Thanks!
I have the same engine setup as you without the roller rockers and about a 9.6 compression. Also I have a Holley 750 on top of my engine. I completed the engine and put it on a dyno back in early December 2001. My best dyno numbers from ten pulls were, 376hp and 451 torque. My best numbers were with 72 & 80 jets, 38 deg advance, and 2" open carb spacer. Max hp came at 4900 rpm, and max torque at 3700 rpm. This thing sounds just awsome holding it at 4k for a little bit. The power is very impressive. It has only been street driven with the new engine, but it has out ran a number of cars. The only part that I wasn't prepared for is the cost of running it. Before 376hp, I was able to get 11 mpg. After 376hp, I am getting about 2-3 mpg. I got what I always wanted, but I am definitely paying for it. Good luck, and make sure to keep posting new pics on your web site. Can't wait to see it completed. Dan
bigblue , I was just reading your post about 2-3 mpg---man!you scared da hell right outta me----I'm almost ready to start my engine---and pretty quickly thereafter I'll be checking my fuel milage as i breakin the motor----Have you tried putting in smaller jets to increase your milage---or are you going to leave it as it is??--I don't see how you can afford to drive the truck , irrespective of the performance!!!I'm using the truck avenger rated at 670 cfm---maybe my fuel milage will be alittle better--i hope.....fd :-X11
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 31-Mar-02 AT 08:20 AM (EST)]Fuel Mileage ?????????
Now there something nobody really thinks about when they want to boost there performance on there Trucks.
Let see in my Monster 435 Ci Motor She'll use up about 2.5 Gal. in a 300' run spinning at 8000 Rpm's.
So lets see 5280' in a mile Divided by 300' = 17.6 x 2.5 = 44 gals per mile @ $8.50 a gal. for 120 octane racing fuel = $374.00
But then that's with 4.88 gears running 2nd in low range for a max wheel speed of 29 mph..
I got way to much time on my hand ...
Bib Blue, you should be able to do better than that for mileage. I'm managing 10.5mpg with a ton of mods and HP. I expect it to go up next tank as the winter alcohol is not in the gas here anymore. The gasahol cost me 2mpg on another vehicle. I'm still breaking it in.
I have thought about changing the jets in my carb to get better milage. WHen we put it on the dyno, it needed big fat jets to get the hp. My plugs are not all black and rich like I would expect. I am in Minneapolis, and milage goes down in the winter around here with all of the cold. Also I will be getting my 66 Tbird out of storage soon and pulling the 750 carb off of it to try on my 4x4. Hopefully that will help some, as the Tbird carb was purchased brand new last summer and only has 5-6 hours on it.
These 400's will pull a house down the street when they are built, just be prepared to pay to run them. Dan
