Hello I am a long time lurker trying to learn all i can and this site has been great. Lots of knowledge here and today i did it. Just signed the papers to order my new F350 XLT 6.4 Power Stroke W\6 speed manual. I will be using this truck to tow with when we retire in a couple of years but as a daily driver and tow rig for camping until then. Also one topic I have not seen anything on is a timer to let the turbo cool down before shutting down the engine is this something that can be added in the driveway at home easily and would this have any effect on the waranty? Thanks for any help in advance.
A timer? What do you need a timer for? The owners manual states that you should let the truck idle for 3-5 min after long continuous driving at high speeds. If you are just driving around town the turbos should not need a "cool down" time. Of course if it makes you feel better, let it idle a few minutes before shutting it down. Some one correct me if I am wrong. My father in-law who drives big rigs and a 2002 f350 also gave me the same advice when I purchased my 2008 6.4L.
Thats exactly what the manual says to do to cool down the turbos, btw congrats on the choice of truck, you'll love it. Just hang out in the driveway and polish the dash with some tunes on , that'll cool you off too!
its simple, when u pull into your driveway, turn off your radio, grab your phone, hat, whatever.. and by then your turbos have spooled down and the truck is ready to be shut off
My Viper 791XV alarm has a remote start that also has a turbo minder. The turbo minder can be set at many different intervals up to an hour if you like. Before I turn off the key, I hit two buttons, turn off the key, go inside and lock up the truck, all while it is idling. After 3 minutes truck turns itself off.
This unit cannot be installed by anyone other than authorized installers according to the manual. Check it out, I am very pleased with it.
