Hi everyone. 98 Ranger 2.5L ran fine on weekend.Next day heater not working and engine overheats. Was -10 F that night. Had new water pump in the summer although I do here some chirping from front of the engine. I thought that a water pump can leak but still turn and circulate.( Or is this wrong) If the thermostat was stuck I can see it overheating but why would no coolant circulate thru the heater core?
Does it sound like the water pump? Thank you.
when its overheating, feel the radiator and see if the change in temp is gradual or like u draw a line and its hot / cold. my dads truck was over heating when it was cold out and the radiator was plugged
Thanks everyone for responding. The thing I do not understand is why the heater only blows cold air. Would I not get some heat if the thermostat was stuck? I know in the summer if your truck overheats you can put the heater on to prevent boil over.
Is your mix correct? Sounds to me like you may have frozen coolant. If you have a weak mix, it may not all freeze, but may also have a blockage or be partially frozen, the engine could overheat before the ice thaws. Just an idea, I'd test the coolant, at this point it may not have done any damage if that's what is going on.
i would also agree with the termostat call. it would be very cheap and easy to try. start the truck and when it starts getting hot, go grab the top hose and see if its cold or hot. it should be hot
Look, heater core cyrculation does not depend on thermostat, if coolant level is OK, but no heat, pump does not push coolant through heater core.....
It is starange.....
I think there is a bypass valve by the firewall (some have it some don't, why I'm not sure) that bypasses flow between the heater hoses that run through the firewall to keep the flow going and not overheat the motor if the core somehow becomes obstructed. If the core is plugged and that's an easy fix as well as the thermostat. If it is the core be thankful you haven't got a gm pos, they're a major pain to change. Ford's are a cake walk in comparison.
Usually coolant for canadian weather is for -40 dgr C, but if you had to add water it may freeze, but not like a water, it is like a mix of ethylenglicol and cristals of ice, damaging no metal parts but clogging radiator.
Well, you can leave your truck in garage and let ice melt. But I think, source of problem is not in coolant. Opec cap and look inside radiator
This sounds like the coolant forze I have seen this before and the symptoms are the the same no heat form heater but engine overheats. Get it some where warmer and see if it thaws out and every thing works. Hope it didn't break the block.
