460 carb to 460 EFI

I have an 87' F350 with a 460 carb, 4spd manual. I located a 460 EFI from a 94' F250, 5 spd manual, 85k. Comes complete with harness and computer. What issues besides fuel delivery will I have to deal with.

Does your truck use electric fuel pumps with a return system already?

My '85 460 uses that system, and I'm hoping to use it for EFI in the near future. Hopefully in the next few days I'll test the fuel pressure.

I doubt I have enough fuel pressure already (carbs use what, 7-8psi?) vs 40+ for EFI.

But hey, the plumbing would be much harder to DIY than swapping pumps...

Thanks for the reply. Yes, it does have an electric pump. I assume the pressure would not be suitable for EFI. I hope you can just swap out the old pump for the new. I pick up the EFI engine today. I'm going to start the swap in about 2 weeks. Not sure if the O2 sensor will be in the exhaust manifold or if it will be in the exhaust pipe. If in the manifold, I won't have to touch that either. Wish me luck!

I'm pretty sure it'll be in the manifold.

Sounds like it might be a nice easy swap hopefully.

What are you going to use for a computer?

Comes complete w/ the factory computer. Makes it even easier (I hope I'll still be saying this mid-swap!).

Take a nice red LED and turn it into you're check engine light

I wonder what else in the truck the stock computer ties into...

I'd love it if you let me know how this goes, it's a swap I myself have contemplated quite a bit. I was planning to use Megasquirt, but if the factory stuff is easy to put in, then it'll make my decision to do it that much easier...

Im in the process of swaping a 90efi 460 in to my 77. I have been told the 460 heads are different on the efi than the carb. The wiring harness is a pain, theres more to it than i thought but theres little things you have to figure out like the nss, ignition switch because its not wires running the the ignition swith theres a linkage that hooks into a little computer, and fuel linkage is about a foot short. Good luck and keep me informed, and also my o2sensor was in my exhaust about by the tranny.

Hey Great, I'm in the middle of this swap myself. 79 F250 with carb 460 putting in EFI 460. not an easy swap but easier than LT1 swap into 69 elcamino. I'm glad to back in FORD country.

well, with the fuel pump issue. . .my 1987 fuelie 300 had 3 fuel pumps. 1 each low pressure in-tank pumps that both fed a single high pressure pump on the driver side frame rail.

If/when I do this swap on my 87 460 I was just going to go to the junkyard and get the pump and the fuel lines on each end and just drop it in

I have the benefit of having the whole truck to get parts from. I think both tanks (front and side) have pumps in them and will fit right where my old tanks are. If this works maybe all you need is a tank from a later model truck. (plus lines maybe)

I just installed a new saddle tank. I took out the rear as it was leaking. I should be able to remove the current low pressure in-tank pump and replace with a new EFI pump. Return line is there already. As far as wiring, I'll need keyed 12v to the coil and the starter relay. Not sure what else. Haven't looked at the wiring diagram yet. Throttle hook-up needs to be addressed as well. Should start pulling out the carb'ed 460 on Tuesday. Once the EFI is up and running the old 460 will get a rebuild.

That's good news about the tank, hope it works. If you get a t-cable from a 91ish f150-f250. it bolts to the firewall and has a flexible, long cable. That's how i am setting up my throttle. I have a large displacement, high hp, plan for the old 460.

Just to update on the swap. I decided to remove the EFI and go carb. I used the adapter plate from Price Motorsports in Indiana. Swapped out the ignition systems and bolted on a new Holley. Started up on the first try. New motor runs very strong. I don't use this truck very often. Pull a horse trailer once a week and on rare occasions a short pull of a skidloader. EFI does have advantages but the "easy button" just looked too good. All in all, I'm very pleased with the outcome.

Did you have to change the heads also. I understand that carb heads are different from EFI heads. I have a EFI 460 taking up space in my garage
