460 carb to 460 EFI

Does your truck use electric fuel pumps with a return system already?
My '85 460 uses that system, and I'm hoping to use it for EFI in the near future. Hopefully in the next few days I'll test the fuel pressure.
I doubt I have enough fuel pressure already (carbs use what, 7-8psi?) vs 40+ for EFI.
But hey, the plumbing would be much harder to DIY than swapping pumps...

Thanks for the reply. Yes, it does have an electric pump. I assume the pressure would not be suitable for EFI. I hope you can just swap out the old pump for the new. I pick up the EFI engine today. I'm going to start the swap in about 2 weeks. Not sure if the O2 sensor will be in the exhaust manifold or if it will be in the exhaust pipe. If in the manifold, I won't have to touch that either. Wish me luck!

Take a nice red LED and turn it into you're check engine light ![Wink](images/smilies/wink.gif)
I wonder what else in the truck the stock computer ties into...
I'd love it if you let me know how this goes, it's a swap I myself have contemplated quite a bit. I was planning to use Megasquirt, but if the factory stuff is easy to put in, then it'll make my decision to do it that much easier...

Im in the process of swaping a 90efi 460 in to my 77. I have been told the 460 heads are different on the efi than the carb. The wiring harness is a pain, theres more to it than i thought but theres little things you have to figure out like the nss, ignition switch because its not wires running the the ignition swith theres a linkage that hooks into a little computer, and fuel linkage is about a foot short. Good luck and keep me informed, and also my o2sensor was in my exhaust about by the tranny.

well, with the fuel pump issue. . .my 1987 fuelie 300 had 3 fuel pumps. 1 each low pressure in-tank pumps that both fed a single high pressure pump on the driver side frame rail.
If/when I do this swap on my 87 460 I was just going to go to the junkyard and get the pump and the fuel lines on each end and just drop it in

I just installed a new saddle tank. I took out the rear as it was leaking. I should be able to remove the current low pressure in-tank pump and replace with a new EFI pump. Return line is there already. As far as wiring, I'll need keyed 12v to the coil and the starter relay. Not sure what else. Haven't looked at the wiring diagram yet. Throttle hook-up needs to be addressed as well. Should start pulling out the carb'ed 460 on Tuesday. Once the EFI is up and running the old 460 will get a rebuild.

Just to update on the swap. I decided to remove the EFI and go carb. I used the adapter plate from Price Motorsports in Indiana. Swapped out the ignition systems and bolted on a new Holley. Started up on the first try. New motor runs very strong. I don't use this truck very often. Pull a horse trailer once a week and on rare occasions a short pull of a skidloader. EFI does have advantages but the "easy button" just looked too good. All in all, I'm very pleased with the outcome.
