I recently bought a 98 ranger supercab , 4x4, 3.0 A.T.Ithought it would make nice company for my 97 F350 Powerstroke 4x4 and my 61 shortbox uniside. It has 131K miles and is very nice , except it has no power and runs very rough. Ihave changed plugs and wires, {motorcraft} fuel filter and pvc air filter, and check grounds and connections, cleaned maf. It has no codes stored, CEL lamp is out and no codes in memory. I have a coil pack coming on monday , what are my odds that will fix this?BTW the plugs indicated it was running rich. and I did add a can of seafoam to the 5 gal of gas I put in , it was ,of course nearly empty when I got it . Ican get about 45 miles per hour max on my lastride and it was wanting ? to backfire thru the exhaust. Do I install the coil pack or look els where ,such as O2 sensor? Thank you all in advance for your help! . gh
Take the O2 sensor and hold it in a propane torch for about 15 seconds wipe it off
and see how it looks if it still has some build up another 10 seconds at a time until
it is pretty clean and the openings are clear of aany build up. There is a test you
can do with a multi meter but isn't really needed if cleaning it doesn't help the running
problem testing it would be worth it versus buying a new one. IF the truck was run
rich for along time the cat could have some build up and doing the straight pipe test
could rule that out. Be sure to put silver antisieze on the O2 sensors threads and do
not block the wire end of it with anything since it needs to breathe to work properly.
Before replacing coil packs, test them, measure the resistance of the primary circuit, and the primary to secondary resistance. If any are out of specs, then you should replace. That way you don't waste money fixing something that is not the problem. I would suspect that the O2 sensor is probably original, and should have been replaced about 40,000 miles ago.
