New truck (to me)

Hey I just picked up a free 95 4 cylinder ranger from my brother in law for free. It seems to have new plugs and wires and filters. He does say that it was losing power though and is a lot slower than it used to be. It also back fires some times. Any thoughts on what this could be and what to check/look out for on these model.
It is a 2wd reg cab with the 5spd and 157k. My new daily driver so my fj80 can go more towards camping and 4wd.

Off the top of my head I would say the timing belt may have jumped a tooth. That would cause rough idling, and backfiring. However, I am by no means an expert on on the 90's trucks, I have not worked professionally on vehicles since the middle 80's.

Pull the O2 sensor out and clean them with 15 seconds in a propane torch, wipe it
clean if it still has build up another 10 seconds, when it is reasonably clean and the
openings are clear reinstall with silver antisieze on the threads. The Lucas fuel
treatment works wonders on that motor if the injectors are nasty double or triple
dose it and a couple of bottles of heet or iso heet won't hurt. Pulling one plug out
and giving it a look at it's color, clean it then reinstall and run it with the now clean
O2 for 25 miles then pull it back out and see how it looks. It could be fueling it too
much from a out of whack o2 sensor or a dirty injector isn't spraying good so it isn't
getting burnt completely since it is not atomized like it should be. Let's see just how
cheaply you can keep this truck!! If you ask questions here and wait for responses
instead of running out buying parts and have it do the same thing youu could save
alot of money and learn alot to boot. If you don't have a multimeter get one even a
$15.00 one can save you $1500.00!! (just an example) There is a test for the O2 but
see how the cleaning does then we can go from there.

Also check and see if the head gasket needs to be changed.
