4 wire O2 sensor versus 3 wire O2 sensor

Is there any difference between the after-market 3 wire O2 sensor and the original 4 wire O2 sensor?

I did not see this question addressed before?

Troubleshooting an 0171 and 0174 error that only happens in colder weather, would estimate lower than 40 degrees or so.

I have check both the ECT and the IAT sensor with a DVM and they are within range with both a hot and cold engine. Cleaned the MAF with MAF cleaner - its voltages look okay also. Other than pulling and testing the O2 sensors, not sure what else to look at.

The driver and passenger side O2 sensors were replaced several years ago. The original 4 wire sensors were replaced with 3 wire sensors. The one behind the catalytic converter is original.

98 Ranger XLT, 4x4, 4.0L engine.

Thanks in advance for any help

If your original sensor has 4 wires, you replacement needs 4 wires. If the replacement you got only has three, it is the wrong one. They may work, don't get me wrong. I believe one of the wires is a ground or common, though I don't have a wiring diagram to verify that. While the exhaust acts as a ground, it is not always a good ground.
