Hey guys, looks like I'm going to be rebuilding my engine this winter. I just wanted to know how much horsepower gain, I will see, if I have my engine bored 30 over, with high performance pistons. I am also planning on putting a 2 1/2" stainless steel exhaust system on it, at the same time, I will NOT be putting on another cat. converter, it's just going to be a pipe, from the manifold, to a single Thrush glasspack, and that's it. Anyhow, I just wanted to see how much horsepoewr, torque gain I might get out of that set up.
Thanks guys,
Christopher J. Salisbury

PS. I'm also installing, as high a performance cam as possible, that is going to be set up for horsepower, not torque.
Where are you getting your headers from? I'd love to help my 300-6 with a set. Have you a better intake manifold and carb set-up also?
Regards,
Carrico
Well, I was planning on putting on headers too, probably the new split manifolds off of a newer F150.(with the 300 ofcourse) I am also planning on the 390cfm Holley. I haven't tried any of this, because this is going to cost me $$$ but, I will do everything I have listed, and I will post the results at this message when I'm done. I will include the dyno test too, so others can get the real horse power, and torque curve out of the setup above, instead of me guessing. When I get a scanner, I will post pics of my pickup, and the engine. (with the engine inside and outside the pickup)
Thanks for the interest in my little project!

PS, I'm just getting the headers off of a junk yard truck. I guess it won't be a single exhaust anymore, it'll have to be duals, both bent out one side! :-) (I like the original/suped up look)
Run 'em out under the steps in front of the wheels, I'm gonna run one accross under the bellhousing to the step on the drivers side on my 82 when get my FI exhaust manifold installed(it's still on a busted 90 300)it looks better, people will think you have an 8, and it probably would be a little quieter in the cab, not that I'm gonna run quiet mufflers, a set of Flowmaster 40 series fits the bill :-) I currently have stock pipe(21/4") back to where the cat was, then I have a 2½" cherry bomb welded on, and I have 2½" pipe running from there out to the step, it is kinda loud in the truck(no carpet on the floor or insulation in the doors) but it is much louder outside.
Good Luck

Just notoced that your truck is Blue and Silver, is that the scheme with blue on the top, silver in the middle, and blue at the bottom again? I am thinking I might paint my truck that way, steel grey is boring, and I need to paint the truck anyway(too much primer...)
Evan MacDonald
Evan,
That is exactly the way my truck is painted. I have the med. blue, top and bottom, and bright silver in the middle. I think it's one of the nicest looking schemes in that era, but of course I'm way too biased. :-) When I get it repainted next Summer, it's going to be the exact same paint scheme, I really like it. Besides, it needs to be repainted, it got noticebly keyed last week.
82F100SWB,
Thanks for the suggestion, I think it would look alot better your way, I'm going to put the pipes under the steps, just like you said.
MAN! I love this website, so many great suggestions! :-)

You wouldn't happen to know the paint codes, I'm going to paint my truck soon, and that scheme is the only one I like other than solid Black.
Evan MacDonald
Ok, I just got back from the barn, and my door jam says: 3P, 1G. I'm guessing that the 3P is the blue, and the 1G is the silver. Another reason I like that scheme, is because it's the only one like it in Central Texas. (I think ;-)) Maybe someone out there could tell me if this paint scheme was a more rare one? Did it cost more to have the colors in that combination?

I think that the 2 tone paint job would be more costly, the first time I saw that paint scheme was in an ad in a 1981 or 82 Hot Rod, I'm going to scan the ad in, but I never get around to it. from what I can tell, that scheme was only avalable on stepside trucks, which may be why you don't see many. When I paint my truck, I am putting in a grille for a 1980(no Ford emblem) putting Mercury lettering across the hood, installing a set of M100 badges(hard to find,)a Mercury tailgate, and a Mercury wheel center/horn buttons(very hard to find) so I am going to have a 1982 Mercury M100, how many people can say that they have one?
If you want to check my truck out, it's at

Chris,
if what everyone has been telling me is right, you might try getting a head for a 240, as they supposedly have smaller combustion chambers, which means more compression, a higher ratio and more power, as soon as I get my tractor running I'm gonna find out, I have a 240, but, it's in a 66 F100 that has been parked in a manure pile behind a barn for the last 23 years, so I can't exactally get my truck in to it without getting really stuck(manure is very slippery.)
Good Luck
Evan MacDonald
WOW! Great idea for the Mercury conversion! You're alot more creative than me!!! I'm going to leave that one to you though, I like my blue oval. :-) Anyhow, I have read something about putting 240 heads on a 300, and it looks like it might be worth trying, so if you're willing to take the risk, PLEASE POST! It's something that I've wanted to try, but am too chicken to do so! I hope you get that '66 out of that pile, it's going to be hard though, without four wheel drive, it's worse than clay, or mud! LOL

PS GREAT website, it looks like my truck got the same treatment as yours! 15X8 white spoke rims, and the story's you tell are comparable to mine, very cool. I'm glad to know that there's another one of us out there...
I'm gonna pick up the 240 head this weekend, I'm gonna leave the block untill I get my tractor running, I rigged up a block off plate so it won't fill with water. I found the ad tha I've been meaning to scan in, it's in a 1980 Hot Rod, I'm gonna scan it in tomorrow. I just checked the rear end ratio in my truck, I thought it was 3:1, but it has 2.73's, no wonder I have to take off in low all the time. I also scored a 351w that I'm gonna build for the truck, I'm not gonna put it in untill the 300 self destructs though, I also got a transfer case, output shaft and adapter to hook it up to my tranny, now I'm gonna have a total reduction of 49:1 in low low(better than a new Jeep) that should enable me to drag stuff around(espically parts trucks..)

Chris, rather than fill your inboit's fairly big), I put the ad up on a mirror of my site(had to fill the space or I'd loose it,and it's on a faster connection too,) it's at http://www.stfx.ca/people/edmacdon/ads.html
I eventually will have many more(have lots to scan.) I got the starter for my tractor back today, so it looks like I'm gonna get the whole engine and tranny this weekend, I just have to install the Reese hitch and brake controller I bought for the truck.

WOW! great picture! There are a couple of differances between that truck and my own, like how it's got flat rims, intead of deep dish's like mine, and the tape that seperates the blue and silver on my truck, is the "newer" colored tape that they used in 1982-1986? (baby blue on dark blue) The other thing that's differant is the grill, and hood, when did they stop that look? In '81 or '82? I really like those old style tires too, if I could only find a set... :-) You know, those flaresides sure do look alot classier, and tougher than the ch*vy's, the ch*vy's are too round, and ugly! We have one on our street, with a 350, it's really nasty looking, I think it's an '82. I know I can beat it, it's kinda like a Harley,(no offense :-)) it's sloooooow off the line.
