can u say WHOA 10 MPG?! yeah thats right...i think i have the most inefficient 6 cylinder every made. But it is mostly the drivers fault. I have just inherited this truck from my dad. I always knew how great this truck was ever since we got it... we even looked at GMC's and Chevies before we bought this truck in 93...I think it was God's will that lead us to this baby! haha
anyway...like i said its partly the owners fault for its poor milage. My father has never changed the spark plugs on this truck...just imagine all the other things that have not been maintained.
It now has 87K on it, its a miracle how long the plugs have lasted!
I'm gonna get a tune-up over the summer....considering how poorly maintained this vehicle is... can u tell me what i should go ahead and replace during the tune-up? eg. PCV, EGR, etc.
First thing I would recommend is the spark plugs. Change them NOW. Don't wait. You will probably notice better performance. Plugs are cheap and they aren't hard to change on the 300. Takes me half an hour tops, and I am usually goofing off too. I would also change the air filter too, but if you can't afford it, you can blow it out with an air compressor. Just remember to blow it out from the inside. You want to blow all the dust out of the filter, not in. As for the PCV valve, you can check it easily. With the truck not running, shake the PCV valve. You should hear a rattling noise. With the truck running and at operating temp, remove the PCV valve from the valve cover. The PCV valve should be sucking air in. Stick your finger on it, and you will feel it. If you checked the valve, and it isn't working properly, you can clean it. Squirt WD-40 or Gumout or whatever in it, then blow it out. Don't use very much pressure. Three to five PSI max. I just blow it out with my mouth.
I get approx. 18 city, and 20-22 highway with my 300. It's totally stock. Unfortunatly It will be dropping to 15 city, when I supe it up, oh well, I crave c&$#y eating performance.

I get betwen 19 and 24 mpg with my 82, it has a NP435 4 speed, and 3:1 gears in the rear with 235/75/15's, it used to get 30, but the 4 speed o/d tranny sucked, I could barely tke off. I expect it will drop to around 15 mpg by the time I'm done with it, I know it'l eat 350 powered Chevy trucks now(don't ask why) and it'll squeal with a jab of the throttle in low :-)

Just did a stock rebuild on my 300 and after 1200 miles I am getting 15 miles per gallon. My truck is always loaded with tools and shell, about 600 lbs. It is a 71 F100 4x4 short bed, 3.73 gears, NP 435 and an NP 205 trans case.Next up , lockers front and rear.
My mistake, I get 25(I checked) and I have 2.73 rear gears(checked that too) which makes taking off in second barely do-able, but I just got a transfer case, so I will have a 49:1 crawl ratio, better than a new Jeep......

I think I take the cake, and with a smaller six, too. I have a 240ci that is cranking out 9mpg. Cool huh? I didn't think so either, thats why I'm rebuilding the carb and resetting the timing. I'll get back to you after that
Well I followed your advice and got the new spark plugs, new air filter, and new fuel filter, got the PVC, O2, and EGR checked and passed. Unfortunately it has been about a week now and i'm still getting around 10-12 MPG. I'm guessing MAYBE, the computer chip still has to adjust....but i don't know. Its an EFI 1993 engine going on 87.5K miles. Someone tell me what to look at next.
P.S. hey 240, Yeah that really bites on a smaller engine...9 MPG?! sheesh. I have a friend with a 351 that gets 15 MPG...and i'm mad! But anyway...I didn't get the timing on my truck adjusted yet either and maybe thats the next thing...keep us posted on the progress, i'm not a mechanic so i don't know exactly how things work...so let me know.
Try disconnecting your battery for a while, it should force your computer to re-earn the best mixture etc. for your engine.

Hey Nod, I just got through doing a Dana Trac-Loc (a reasonably mild OEM limited slip) in the front of my '91, and even that mild a traction-aiding device makes for some WEIRD steering.
You might want to think about a front locker very, very carefully.
Oh, and my 300 does 12 mpg...with 4.10s.

Just my 2 cents worth.... my 65 F-100 w/ built 240 (390 Holley 4 bbl, headers, RV cam) gets approx. 11-12 mpg in town, and almost 19 mpg highway. Thats with a 4 speed and 3.70 gears.
That 240 that you've setup, is very similar to what I want to do to my 300. I was just curious to see how much horsepower, and torque you get. I'm assuming that you have great torque because of the RV cam, but how does that RV help with the horses, and does it get up and go at speed, lets say 70? How hard was it to put on that 4 barrel, was it just bolt on with the new manifold?
Thank you,
Chris

Steakman, I have honestly never had any kind of Dyno done to my engine, so I am not sure of how much HP or torque I am pushing. But I do have good take off power with this set up. The cam, in my opinion anyway, helps more with the torque on my motor, but does give a few extra ponies. My best power range is between about 55 and 75 mph, but tops out around 90 to 95 mph. Hope to convert to a C4 and 3.00 gears, to help some of my bottom end power in the top end, and to help with mileage since my truck is more of a cruiser than a workhorse. Oh, and yes, the Holley is a direct bolt on to my intake... that is an Offenhauser 4 bbl intake that is. They both bolt directly to the engine, no mods necessary.
well I used to get 15-16mpg and now get 12-13 with performance mods.
I'm running at 205hp 330ft-lbs(engine dyno with holley 450cfm which is too small)
this is in a 83' Bronco with 33" thornbirds and a locked rea end, I can get rubber going into 3rd gear with 3:50 gears and a NP435 tranny
