Timing Gear

Anyone know what the timing gears are made of in the 300 (82' F100)? My only other Ford was a 75 Granada with a 302 and after leaving me on the side of the road late one night I discovered that the timing gear was made from some sort of fiberglass or plastic material. Needless to say, with 90,000 miles on the engine the teeth were almost non existant. I'm approaching 90,000 on my truck and if this is going to be a repeat, I want to replace the gears before I'm stranded.

a 302 has a timing chain that can slip. a 300 has gear drive that can't jump time. the gears are all metal unlike stock timing chains.

Well, there are at least 4 different types of 300 timing gears, steel/steel coarse tooth, steel/steel fine tooth, steel/phenolic, and steel/aluminum, There is no chain to stretch etc. and, because it's a factory 2 gear setup, the cam rotates opposite to the motor.

jessbass: We love the 300 I6. I had a '77, an '84, and now have a '95. Love it with EFI. I love this motor so much that I put the old air cleaner sticker from a '67 on it. It says 170 hp and that's about what this '95 would be rated under the rating method used back then. The sticker doesn't show well in this photo, but says "300 cubic inches, horsepower 170" It also has an I6 figure in the middle where the six is on top of the I. Sticker is yellow and red and avail from the FTE store:
