Hey guys, got a question for ya...How in the heck do you get to the oil sending unit for a 99 5.4 Eddie Bauer 4X4? I have found it, and I can see it....I can even touch it with just the tips of my fingers, but EVERYTHING under the hood is in the way...lol Do I have to take the oil filter off, or remove the tire to get to it? Just 2 of the possible ideas I have had....Just wondering if anyone has an easier way to accomplish this....
Bump Bump....lol Come on guys...I have searched the forums and haven't been able to find where anyone explains this. Surely someone has changed this out. Any ideas would be helpful. 2WD would be easy, but with 4X4, the whole front end is between me and the sending unit.
i was lazy and sent it to the shop (stealership) in the middle of January in WI and the temp at that time was -10. Only set me back $60. it was well worth it. I was like you see it, touched it, just couldn't get the darn thing out

LOL...I completely understand. It is nowhere near that bad here in AR, and I do like to play the DIY'er whenever I can. I have even already bought the new sending unit....now I just want to put it in....get that feeling of accomplishment. Oh well...guess I'll keep laying under the truck and staring at it...maybe something will come to me. If it does, I'll post it so as to maybe help out the next DIY sucker...
WOOT WOOT!!! Who's tha man...lol Got a little info for the next guy who tackles this job on their own and does a search in here. Got to have a medium well 13/16 socket. Deep well won't work on the 4X4 because it hits the front end. Very tight clearance. Add a swivel socket, and about 2 feet of extensions. The rest is self explanitory. With these tools, it only took me about 5 minutes to change it out though. You can lay behind the front tire and look up to the oil filter. You can just reach a hand up in there to unplug the wire, and then change it out. The hardest part was trying to plug the wire into the new sending unit. Good luck everyone and have fun... Later
I see lots of folks needing a new sending unit. Mine seems to get stuck if the truck sets a few days and shows no OP for a while on startup. If you drive it every day, it works fine. Is this what y'all are experiencing, too? I've just been ignoring it.
Mine would randomly stop working. Only when the weather was cold. It started it last winter, but before I was able to get it replaced, the weather warmed up and it worked normally. Didn't have a lick of problems out of it till the weather recently turned cold again. When I crank it, it pops right up and works, but then usually in a few minutes drops down to zero. Once the engine warms up, it starts working again. Doesn't hurt anything, but annoying as hell!!! Your problem sounds more like your gauge cluster is sticking, not the sending unit. Might have to take the cluster out and clean the needle....just an idea.
