Rear main seal question

Once again the repair manuals have failed to give small detail so I have come to the experts who may have replaced a rear main seal. My question is which way does it go on? with the open end forward or backwards. The old one fell off before I could see which way it goes and the manuals tell me the usual stuff. How the remove everything clean it and install it but not which way the thing points. Also has anyone re-used there head bolts and had a problem with them. The box for the head gasket says that I MUST replace them. They make it sound like if I don't the truck will catch fire. Of course they tell you to buy their brand and they give a reason for why they are the best. I think it is just a gimmick. I have never had a problem using headbolts twice. 3 times might be questionable. This engine has never been apart with around 130,000 miles on it and I'm sure it could have gone another 100,000 if it weren't leaking oil to the point where it was driving me nuts.

People who say it can't be done should not interrupt the person doing it.

Rear main seal question

The rear main seal is installed with the flat surface facing you as you install it . The only time head bolts need to be replaced is if you have an aluminum head or all aluminum engine . The head bolts for those engines are designed to be used only once because the threads are designed to distort once torqued .
