Can the 6 pull a horse trailer???

I live in Calgary alberta Canada. Gas here just hit 74 cents per litre. It is expected to hit 80 soon. I would like to pull a single horse trailer and have always been partial to the Ford truck. Ideally I want 2 Fords 4x4 F150's with the 6. What are the chances of the 6 pulling a single horse trailer?? Also what years do you recommend I buy?
Thanks
Russ

Can the 6 pull a horse trailer???

The six doesn't take off as fast, but has plently of torq to pull. I've heard of 300-6 out powering 350's (with modified intake and headers).

My '79 runs strong still after factory build at 180K miles. I get 16 MPG. Stay away from early to mid 80's. Go for older or younger.

Can the 6 pull a horse trailer???

1984-1986 used feedback carbs which are a b*tch to get running right. Once you get them running right, though, they work fine. Mine (finally) runs great and will pull a loaded stock trailer at 65, just takes awhile to get up there. I'd say go with the six for your single horse trailer.

I am sure a 300-6 can pull a 1 horse trailer, however if the 300-6 is tied into a 2.73 rearend(differential) forget it. Make sure you have at least a differential that has a gearing of 3.55 or lower (numerically higher, ie 4.10s). If so you will have no problem. Gas mileage will go down as to be expected.

Thanks for the feedback especially about the carbs. I have owned various brands of vehicles over the years and the 2 things that consistantly gave mechanics the most difficulty were carbs and electrical issues. I suspect it is due to problem solving. It is not a difficlut task to R and R (remove and replace) the majority of mechanical components. If you want to test a mechanics skill set, give him a carb to adjust.
Based on the postings so far every one is in agreement with the ability of the 6 to pull a horse trailer. I understand their will be an increase in the time it takes to reach highway speed. The trailer will be used approximately 2-3 times per week so I can live with this. One post stated to check the gearing ratio and I thank him for that good advice. Now the fun part. I will start searching the classified ads for my Ford 4x4 trucks.
Thanks everyone for your assistance.

the six is a real puller, mine has the fuel injection, no problems with carbs. starts and runs smooth without any hesitation. very reliable . i pull a car trailer and frequently have the bed loaded with stuff, more than the 3/4 ton rating. no problems what so ever. good luck

if you are goin' to have a bear it might as well be a grizley.

Thanks for the info 87f250. What is the easiest way to switch gears if need be - replace the differerential carrier or remove and replace the whole rear axle assembly?

Don't forget that if you buy a 4x4, you will need to change the gears in both differentials. With this in mind, I would look for a truck that has the low gearing already. It's just one less hassle...

i agree with oldblue on the 4x4, but imho changing the whole axle would be eaiser as long as you know the condition, only because i have never just changed the gear. i am thinking a bout changing gears to get some better gas milage, i want to go higher though. 65 mph at 3200 rpm is kinda rough.

The 300-6 used to be used in F-600/700 trucks as the base engine, and was used as the commercial chassis cab F-250/350 until '97.

You'll have no engine-related problems pulling anything.

But...

If you get an F-150/250LD with a 5-spd. OD manual transmission, watch out. That Mazda-built 5-spd. is the Achilles heel of an otherwise good package, and is not up to any kind of actual towing use; it's marginal just in a commuter use.

Ford used a different 5-spd. in the F-250LD/F-350, built by ZF, and supposedly used it sporadically in the F-150.

The good tranny has diagonal crosshatch exterior case ribbing on
it, the Mazda a vertical/horizontal crosshatch pattern.

A traditional granny-low 4-spd. with a fairly fast rear axle ratio would probably be the way to go.

On a second note, i was suprised by your remark about gas being 74 cents a litre and going to be 80. It seemed like you were complaining but to me this seems fairly weird, even though i am not too sure on the difference in size between a litre and a gallon, but at 80 cents i would be crapping my pants considering that we(California and others) are paying $1.90 and up for gas, and thats the cheap crap. So be thankful cause I would sure like to go back 3 years and load up on like 10 barrels of gas at 1.15 a gallon.
