My '51 came to me somewhat in pieces, basically nothing mounted on the firewall. I would like to see what the firewall SHOULD look like, on a stock 51 or 52, even a 48-50 would be more than I have. In particular, I'd like to see photos of the accelerator pedal linkage, where the 6-volt regulator, etc, go, just about everything.
Although most have recommended I convert to 12 volts, and I have seriously considered doing that, I still might leave it 6 volts, as I have a brand new rebuilt 6 volt genny, as well as a new 6 volt battery. So I am still up in the air about that.
Anyway, if anyone has pictures of stock firewalls, etc, I SURE would appreciate it! You can email me at:
i think there are a couple of shots of my 49's engine compartment in the gallery . if they ain't clear 'nuff give me a holler and i'll click off a couple more as i got to retake the pics for the photo contest anyway . oh and this ol' girl is original save for the p.o rewiring it so i'd assume it's all where it's supposed to be .
I'm one for keeping these trucks stock, but I would advize against using 6 volts anymore.
As the saying goes, "don't walk by my 6 volt truck with ice cream, it won't start then."
The 6 volt system will do you fine. My '54 is 6 volt and I am able to start it in 0 degree weather after sitting in the garage for 3 weeks. You need to have a reuilt generato, rebuilt starter, new cables of the proper gauge. They should be '0' gauge. Install new cables from the batt to the ground, from the batt to the starter and from the starter to the gen.
I have been using the same 6 volt battery since 1999!
As for the 6-volt. It's going to be a weekend, fair-weather truck, not a daily driver. It's just so close to stock, I might keep it that way. I figure the ones that have been modified, in some way or the other, far outnumber the ones that are pretty original. I don't intend to "restore" it, but I do like the idea of "stock".
well right now i was gonna go out and snap some pics of mine for you , but it's gonna have to wait seeing as it's raining and adding to the buildup already on smiley . i'll get some though as soon as possible , but for now you'll have ti get our buddies from the warmer climates to go out and get one . da-- i gotta go out and drive in this crap another day !!!!!!!!!!!!!
I know all about that! We have freezing rain here, and I have to take my daughter out Xmas shopping, then it's to work....fortunately I have 4WD, but it's still very nasty!
I'm very patient, and a LONG way before I'm ready- just trying to get "prepared".
SnowKing - great picture! Shows me what the inner wells and supports look like. Mine was just bolted together in a hurry, with 3" long carriage bolts, no supports, etc. Just enough to be able to move it, sometime in the long past. I now have much better inner wells, most of the supports, so your picture was a big help!
