I'm considering upgrading my ignition and its come down between these 2 units. The rev limiter doesnt matter to me, so other than that... which unit would be the best? They seem pretty equal except the Hi-6S is an "inductive" unit where as the 6A is a capacitive. Also, Summit will through in a free coil right now with the Hi-6
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 11-Feb-02 AT 03:17 PM (EST)]Well think about it... you have an engine known for its low-RPM torque - who has the patent on the technology to improve the burn (beyond that of the run-of-the-mill CDI ignition) at those lower RPM's?
But if you also are looking for higher RPM engine-beating runs, who is used by more racers than any other ignition?
Would a stock engine see much improvement in a MSD then? My friend claims he picked up a noticeable amount of throttle response and power... and 1-2mpg as well. That was also on a 96 T/A though, a tad different than a low revving work engine
Well now I may be the wrong person to ask at this time. I put my MSD-6A, MSD TFI, wires, rotor, cap, MSD harness on a few weeks ago, but I really haven't gone anywhere but around town with it so far.
I also didn't regap the plugs, and the regapping is where one gains power.
Do a search for "MSD ignition" (an "AND" search) in forums like this one and the '87 to '96 trucks forums, and I think you'll find many posters who claim it's the best improvement they've done to their I-6 or V-8.
I'd like to get it out on the open highway soon, doing both seat-of-pants power and MPG readings, but that probably won't happen for a few weekends.
I'm almost certain you'll see a 1 to 2 MPG improvement on the I-6 with either the Crane or the MSD, that's really not that hard of a gain for an ignition system.
I've read, but not experienced, a lot of anti-stock Ford-TFI (Thick Film Ignition) coil posts. Supposedly they're weak and don't last long due to a poor design. If that's true, a change-out of the stock coil for a CDI box and a (well-designed) aftermarket coil should give noticeable gains.
(Think about an EGR restrictor plate, too. This is one item I will attest to making noticeable improvements in my experience!)
I'm not going to chime in with unsubstantiated power claims before I experience them, so hopefully other posters will add input. My truck does start faster when cold, though.
I also have the MSD capacitor to add to my system soon, and a few people in-the-know claim the large external capacitor is more than merely a noise filter.
Thats a bit of magazine testing. I'm certainly surprised that a magazine didn't like the Crane testing the best. I didn't copy it virbatim as I am unsure of the legality concering the posting.
No experience with the crane but i have the MSD 6a in my truck and it did give me more noticeable power. I havn't gotten around to regapping the spart plugs yet either. I got the MSD coil to go along with it as well. Hope that helps.
