i live in s florida and the last 3 months after high speed freeway driveing i get on to local heavy traffic, red light to red light and while at a idle the engine starts breaking up. if i can get going in vehicle speed she will go down the road as if nothing is wrong until i am at a stop again. the computer gives no codes. the temp gauge does not go up. leave the hood up 20 mins and im on my way. I have plugged the EGR. I have replaced coil, distributer, cap, roter, wires, plugs, o2 sens, mapp sens. there is plenty of gas pressure at the rail. thinking ICM or computer or even the cat.
Hey, welcome to the club! Sounds a lot like the problem I had. Almost temperature related. Never could get it to consistantly do it. The worst was a trip out to Eureka Springs AR and over to the Little House on the Prairie in KS. Year before last during Labor Day. 106 to 108 degrees every day. Truck ran fine in the morning but a little afternoon even while moving it would start cutting out and bucking. Pulled in to the Ford at Nowata OK and pulled it in and changed the module on the distibuter. In the shade it had cooled off and ran fine for about 20 miles. Wasn't until winter set in it finally died and wouldn't start. I had replaced all you did and more prior to this. Turned out to be the wiring harness running from the drivers fender well and all those relays and the engine. Just a few feet long and made in Mexico. $400 to put a new one in. Finally fixed it. Not saying it is your problem, but I had replaced everything but that and the engine. I look for it to give me trouble again, as the new one was also made in Mexico.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 13-Feb-02 AT 10:42 PM (EST)]I guess by reading your post that you have replaced the pickup coil inside the distbutor. That is prime culprit. if not that then start looking at the ground connections. I have used spot cooling agents ether freezit etc to test individual components for heat related problems spray a part or a connection and then see if it starts (be careful if you use ether). This can be a problem if it only fails a long way from home.
i do not get stuck far from home long because if i can get the truck over 15 miles an hour and get on the highway, i can fly like nothing was wrong, just sitting in traffic or going very slow. and yes the distributer is new that i put in this past weekend. i also put in a k&n filtercharger system, I love it. It is everyday horsepower that i didn't have before. I have 1,000lbs payload at all times and get 16 mpg. I don't know with my k&n yet.
I just remebered something. Does this one have the blower on it that blows air over the injectors when it gets so hot. It will be a little blower setting on the passenger fender well with a hose going to the injector area of the motor if it has this, make sure it is coming on when things get hot if not they tend to boil fuel in the injectors and this would have symptoms similar to what you describe.
last night replace ICM. today on way from work the computer threw a 181 on the interstate got off at my exit, and at the light the engine was missing bad at low rpms at a stand still. get the truck going over 5 mph and see ya.
