I've recently become addicted to CMT when there is nothing else on at midnight. I've noticed that pretty much nobody writes their own songs. At the end of the videos it shows the writers of the songs and very few are the singer or have the singer involved with them. It's kind of a rip off in my opinion. I almost like listening to particular songs less because the artist didn't write it. I've found this to be true in most types of music too. I never really payed any attention to it until now. What is everyone else's take?
There is an old folk song in our family. My Uncles have written several too, but you'll never see them in lights.
"Oh my uncle he is screwy
But he says he's feelin grand
At breakfast time he sits and stirs
His oatmeal with his hand.
My mother called the doctor,
He's the one who cured our goat
The doctor said your Uncle's fine
He's just a feelin' his oats!"
And they aren't famous? The fix is in, I tell ya!
Actually, a few artists do write their own (or at least most of their own) songs. Everyone famous does songs by other writers, though. I think if you are a singer and read a song by another writer that just strikes your fancy, you should go ahead and record it. Nothing wrong with that.
I do appreciate what you are saying as I have always been a fan of those that write and perform their own music. Neil Young, James Taylor, Paul Simon, Bob Dylan, Pink Floyd come to mind.
Not many write their own songs, but I have discovered that I do not like the noise that comes from the ones that do write their own songs today. I just have to sit back and wonder to myself how they even make it onto the radio. The songs make no sense.
Sadly ugly people don't sell records, the solution, they find some kid with a pretty face to sing their songs. I personally hate CMT, way to much pop country crap between good songs.
A good song can be recorded by numerous artists in a number of different styles that all sound good. Some covers of popular songs are also good but most, like remakes of popular films, fall well short of the mark.
I still do not understand how some songs and groups could have ever gotten popular. Most of the new stuff you hear now is mass-produced formula music that gets plugged in to the "face of the week". When was the last time you heard something different and good? Does'nt happen often enough, for sure.
Everyone has some kind of talent, and in some that talent is music, though far fewer than think so.
There are still a few country "artist" that write there own stuff. Like Toby Keith and that Aussie guy who is married to Nicole Kidman to name a couple.
I think if I were dating Nicole Kidman I'd just quit my job. I'd be to busy with other things.

I didn't think they played music videos on CMT....
