Question rear driveshaft slip joint

I recently removed the slip joint on my rear driveshaft to grease it. The truck would "thump" when starting off and coming to a stop. I applied the blue teflon grease from Ford and installed a new boot. My question is this,Is it normal for the slip joint to be hard to install on the driveshaft spline end? I coud'nt just slip it on,I had to tap it on with a hammer. I applied enough grease on the spline.I don't get anymore "thunking" or any vibration. Thanks for any advice.

I've never had one that I had to use a hammer on, but I have had them where it took all I could do to get them to slip all the way on. I believe it was because I put too much grease and actually created a seal where I was trying to compress the air further up the spline. If it isn't thunking on you, I would say you have it done.

it should start easy but if too much grease could get some hydraulic pressure behind it and be hard to completely seat
there is a key tooth on spline but if you got that off would take a lot of hammering
