Vin 5G15055*

Wondering if anybody can help. My granddad had a Ford 44-47 dump truck which we used as a grain truck on our farm. I'm trying to register it with the Ministry of Transportation (I'm in Ontario, Canada) and found 5G15055* on the bell housing and haven't been able to determine what year or model this is. Can anybody help? I've checked

http://www.vanpeltsales.com/FH_web/...rialnumbers.htm and
http://groups.msn.com/1942-1947Fordtrucks/1946vin.msnw with no luck.

Wish there were some way to get in touch with you on this truck. I could probably help you out with it.
I to am in ON. Canada, and it should not be a big problem in getting it registered properly.
With the number 5G, as the prefix in the Serial #, it seems as though it is a 6 Cyl. am I correct in assuming this?

Engine unknown

Thanks for your reply 5 Star - unfortunately the engine has been replaced - I believe with a 8cyl car engine (I'm not that mechanically inclined). FYI - I'm outside Newmarket, Ontario. Think I'll give MTO the vin I've got and tell them it's a 1945 - I don't want them to give me a new vin and therefore classify it as a 2007.

By the way your truck is a 46, not a 44 like you mentioned at first. This happened back in the early years some Trucks never got sold in their production year, and when they were finally sold they were given in our cas an ownership for the year they were sold in.
I am about 30 miles south of you in the Whitby area.
Go to my user name click on it and go to send a private message to me include your email address and I will get back to you.
I have a complete dealer Brochure on these Trucks and will be able to help you out if you are interested.

Here is some info I just found out about with Canadian VINs. Maybe this will help out. Looks like yours might be a "real" '45?

Have to do this in 2 parts to show the pic from a Ford Of Canada Parts Book. It explains the V.I.N. for years 38-46.

Thanks Soule46 and Star 5 - looks like this might be an engine # - one of the sites noted in Canada the engine # could be different that the vin. I'll need to work on making sure I have the complete #. Star 5 - I'm having difficulty reading your posted images - could you email it to me? jdavidson@etherington-ins.com Any ideas what I could use to eat the rust on the frame to try and find the vin number there? I've read that it should be in 3 places and as the fenders have been removed and is a dump - I should have access to atleast 2 of the 3 places.

I looked on my US built '46 half ton. I was only able to find the VIN by the steering box and I think I had someone here say that was the only place he was able to find his also. Mine had a lot of mods done at one time so I wasn't sure if they messed up the SN over the rear wheel (but I didn't find one under the cab anywhere either). I was lucky that my VIN was easy to read by the box though. Thats where I would concentrate my effort. From all the posts I have read you want to go lightly with any sanding etc because sometimes the VIN is stamped very lightly. Many would even recommend against anything as aggressive as sanding as you could lose the VIN entirely, but I have no experience there so hopefully someone else can give you good advice.

Just a further bit of info on the CDN Fords both car & Truck. In 1946 the V.I.N. appeared on the cowl top center, in the form of a tag.
I don't recall if you mentioned that the original Transmission was still in the Truck, if it is there is another place to look for the V.I.N.
It was stamped into the top near the front at center.

If you can't find the V.I.N. on the left front frame rail, which should be the best place as the oil from the steering box and other spilage of oil should have preserved it.
then there is another under the cab, and again on the frame over the rear axle. All are on top drivers side. I would venture to say the the last 2 places would have disappeared long ago, or are under some severe rust, anyway good luck.

Thanks for all your help - found another number and between the website links http://www.vanpeltsales.com/FH_web/f...el_IDchart.htm and the info Star 5 provided I think I have some things figured out. The info wasn't exactly the same but seeing it's Canadian that makes sense. The number CODE (vin) I found is C69T81-H9898 -> 'C' - Canada '69T' - 1946 100h.p. V8 134" wheelbase '81' - Closed Cab 1 1/2 ton '-' from here I hope it's just the number for my truck. Thanks again for all your time and help.
