Anyone know if there is a bad quality Ignition Coil. I found some on ebay for $12. Item #250170837282. Sounds a little too good to be true. If there ok I'll change all 10 for the price of 2 from the dealer
You'd be surprised how much a part costs further up the supply chain.
Boat parts for example, say a water pump rebuild kit. Mercury charges, say, $100 (or more) for the kit. You can find them on eBay for less than $20.
Same part - but NOT from Mercury - direct from the factory who makes them for Mercury. So, same exact part, with a few less middlemen in between.
LOL...all you do is have to say the name Mercury and it is the same thing as saying $$$$$$$$$$$$. Boat expenditures make anything else pale in comparison.
I'm a Yamaha outboard man myself as well as Evinrudes and Johnsons built prior to 1996. I have a 1958 18hp Evinrude that needed work, I went into the dealer and got every part I needed.
Depending on what parts you were looking for, they could have fit a 1973 20HP too
Or a 1949 10HP ... or a ... anyway...
The coils and several ignition parts had BRP on the package which means they were made recently. They were still std parts on smaller outboards before Evinrude went all 4-Stroke around 2000.
I love 2-strokes and still have a soft spot for them. Simple, powerful and theres nothing like the smell of a 2-stroke on a cool fall morning.
Well I thought dkf was a little too kind to the 8.1L lover... sounded to my like he already had an Allison up his butt...well maybe not the whole Allison but certainly something was stuck up there...mayhaps his head ..hell I don't know! (evil grin)
but I agree a little off topic now and then adds character to an other wise dull day "on the boards"
