New user with a rear diff question...

Hello everyone! I've read this forum for several days and decided to join today. I live in California and just purchased an '01 Expedition XLT A4WD.

I noticed that the rear differential seems to be leaking a little bit. I want to do the repair myself, but I don't have any literature on the truck, yet. I was hoping that someone could help enlighten me before I take on this project.

I'm not sure what kind of oil to use, how much to use, if I need an additive, if I need a gasket (part number?, ford only?), or torque specs.

Any advice or insight would be much appreciated!

Where's it leaking from? Front or back?

I cannot remember but someone where guide to to where you can download an owner's manual.

In it will tell you the capacity and the type of gear oil to use. If you have a limited slip you may need friction modifier depending on the brand of fluid you use.

It is leaking from the back (at the splitline). It looks like it's just the bottom and I checked if the bolts were loose, but they were not.

How do I tell if I have limited slip?

Remove and replace the rear end cover gasket.. use black RTV on it.. if its not limited slip replace the fluid with 80/90 gear oil.. or if its limited slip check your owners manual and use an additive for that.

Just replaced the rear axle seals on my 01 4x4 yesterday. If it's a limited slip rear end, oil requirements are 75/140 full synthetic and limited slip additive (4oz bottle from dealership). A little over 3 quarts (2.8-3.1 liters) is specified. With the additive mine was just starting to run out the fill hole when I finished the 3rd quart. Remove the diff cover and clean surfaces thoroughly. I used permatex ultra RTV for the oil resistant properties.
The door jamb sticker will tell you what rear end you have. Should be a 2 character "Diff" designation. I believe if it's a letter and a number (eg, H9) it's limited slip/traction-lok. If it's just numbers, it's not limited slip. My owners manual shows that 75/140 synthetic is recommended for all rear end applications. Just have to add the friction modifier if it's limited slip. If you're not sure, could go ahead and drain/replace the fluid with 75/140 and add the modifier later if you're getting chattering from the rear end. Good luck.

I am needing to change the oil in my rear end. The other night I checked out the rear end to see if I have a drain hole......well I don't. I have the limited slip, so I'm glad I have to take the cover off to drain it so I can make sure everything is ok inside.
