Hi guys, I've been looking around for a 93-03 f250/350 4x4 with either a 460 or v10 for my next turbo project. I was originally only considering the 460, but read a lot of good things about the v10 on this board, plus I really like the superduty body style and they're getting cheap.
Yesterday I test drove several trucks. One was a 2000 350 supercab v10. Total dog! It's probably the slowest truck I've ever driven. I used to drive an old 79 f100 300 I6 that moved better than it did. The engine did run smooth, but it just didn't have much punch when hitting the throttle, and it didn't get moving much better when winding it out.
Then I drove a 99 250 regular cab. It was a little better but still not what I was expecting out of a v10. Then for kicks I hopped in a 97 250 supercab 460 with 320,000 miles on it. It was too beat up to consider buying, but the performance put the v10's to shame. Much better throttle response and low end torque. It got moving just fine without having to wind it out. For towing, I would have been much more comfortable with that truck.
I'm just trying to figure out why an engine with good performance ratings would be so soft. Do they really wake up with some basic bolt-ons? Are the super duties that much heavier than the older body style? At this point I have concentrated my search to the 460's *flame suit on*.
How were the trucks equipped? Same gearing and tire size? Gotta make sure it was apples to apples. The V10 certainly likes to wind out further than the 460s, but I have never lacked power in either. Have you thought about test driving an 05+ Super Duty, with the 3v motors? They gained 60 horse with the extra valve.
Why not try to get an 05 or newer 3 valve with 362 HP? I have never driven an older V10 so I can not comment on the performance of those older V10s versus a 460.
I do know my 05 V10 pulls a 12000 pound Fiver much stronger than my 88 460 pulled the 8000 pound Fiver I owned back then.
Go to Pickuptruck.com and read the comparisons of the new V10s versus the competition in both gas and diesel categories and see how the V10 was chosen as the engine of choice in the 3/4 ton class. A stock 460 would have been an joke in those steep grade trailer pull tests. Ask me how I know? My 460 bogged down on 6% grades with a combined weight of less than 14000 pounds.
My V10 will hold speed or even gain with a combined weight of 20800 pounds on the same grades that killed the 460. The best part...........it uses 30% less fuel than the 460 .
Don't know how you could have driven two trucks that didn't perform like most of the V-10's do. I have had a 99 and now have an 04 and they both have more then enough power and getting to ticket land with either truck was NOT a problem. Just for kicks try to drive a few more and like others have posted the newer the better. Don't give up on a V-10 yet.
Interesting this happened. Friend of mine just sold his 460. Both of our trucks are crew cab 4x4s (his a long bed though). My V10 truck walked all over it. I really liked his F350, but the F250 (mine) has a higher payload, more power, and is pretty much more of what I think a truck should be (tow/haul capacity).
my V10 feels like a hot rod to me. It has plenty of get up and go for a real work truck. I can get by slow drivers on the highway with ease and would smoke the heck out of the tires if I wasn't too cheap to do it. I only have the 3.73 gears. 4.56s would be amazing!
I think kerwat (aka Art) is on to something here. I have a 1998 Club Wagon & while I have had a few problems with it, it feels like I could pull stumps with it. The newer v10's have a lot more power than mine does, so something is wrong. Try another V10, I really don't think you will be disappointed. When I bought mine, the sales folks thought it was like putting air brakes on a chipmunk. It was the 1st one that they had sold too.
i've had a 93 f350 with a 460 and now have a 05 with a v10.the 460 always did everything i wanted but i far prefer the 05.the v10 seems to pull more effortlessly than the 460,although right off idle the big blocks have more grunt but from 2500 on up it's not close.

Mine's the same. I have 3.73s and a curb weight of 6800lbs and I can easily smoke 285/75s on dry level pavement. Tows 8000lbs up all the highway hills around here in WV at 70mph no problems. Can't imagine needing more power.
The OP says a '97 460 runs stronger than an '00 V10?? Nah. I've driven too may 460s to believe it. Not unless the 460 is modded or the V10 is trashed.
Why would you expect a F350 super cab to be a rocket?? 4 tons takes time to get rolling especially if an automatic or a dually.
Find a manual trans F250 V10 then gear it.
Or buy a car.
It wouldn't make sense to put a saddle & a jockey on a draft horse then take it to the track on derby day would it????
I've got plenty of get up and go. It just takes time to get going.
Like my screen name says. Move over I'm coming.
Rich.
Hey I'm Comming.... My 7800 pound factory stock truck in the signature is a ROCKET and will smoke all the the very expensive light high HP cars from light to light....I did not buy it to be a street racer but it is one of the fastest accelerating "stock" vehicles I have ever owned in 30+ years
The original poster needs to find a 01 to 04 2v V10 and any 05 and up 3v V10 in STOCK configuration to get a better "Feel" for seat of the pants acceleration
Lifted, taller tires, large 4x4,4 doors and long bed on a 1999~2000 will not be real fast motivator....Neither will a new motor that is not completely broken in or running on clean air fuel or both.....
I bet both the trucks he drove had 3.73 rear gear and 33" or larger tires while the 460 was probably a 4.10 with stock tire diameter.....
My old truck (95 F350 460) and my new F250 V10 both long bed crew cabs act very similar empty as far as acceleration etc. but pulling an 8-9K trailer the v10 outperforms the 460 in every way. The 95 had a 3.55 rear the new truck a 4.10 which explains some of it I am sure. Both trucks get very similar MPG.
Above, I posted: "will smoke all the the very expensive light high HP cars from light to light"
That should have read:
"will smoke all BUT the the very expensive light high HP cars from light to light"
My truck has an impressive 0 to 40MPH giddy up and go ability.... I attribute a lot of it to the high torque multiplication in the torque converter, good first gear ratio, excellent final ratio, and fairly aggressive stock tire grip on concrete or asphalt..... I think the stance of the 4 door truck also is a big contributor to great take off...as It takes a LOT to bleed off all the torque in smoke...I can make them shred, but usually she just hooks up and moves out smartly!
Wow! I don't know guys. My '02 is certainly unimpressive when it comes to a drag race. No way will it even think about spinning the stock 265 tires. It does everything I need it to do, but it is nowhere near considered to be fast. My '65 F250 w/ a nearly original 352 will easily outrun it...same 3:73 gears.(a lot less weight though)
