Few More Questions...

I seem to be full of questions. I have searched some of this info just not finding exactly what I am looking for.

Truck - 1966 F-100 Short Bed 2wd (351 Windsor)

#1: What type of aftermarket steering wheels work on these trucks? My original is brittle and has some large cracks through it and honestly isn't something I want to be using on the street and have it come apart on me. Do any of the wheels and like autozone and places like that work?

#2: What type of parts list would you need to put power steering into this truck. I am going to add it but don't want to keem making trips to a junkyard or anything when I can get all the parts needed at one time.

I am sure I will have more questions but I will do some extra searching on a few other issues I have mainly how to go about power brakes.

Thanks Guys

1964/70 steering wheels / 1971/77 steering wheels

The same 3 spoke steering wheels were used 1964/66 on F100/250 2WD's, 1967/70 F100/350 2 or 4WD, and 1966/73 Bronco's. The wheels also were used on 1963 Falcon's and Comets.

The steering wheels have been reproduced. Check with our FTE sponsors (see the header above ^^^ for links to sponsors: Blue Oval Truck Parts, Mac's or Auto-Krafters). btw: The same horn ring (Custom Cab) or button (Standard Cab) was used 1964/70.

1971/72 steering wheels have 2 spokes and a black vinyl cover instead of a horn ring or button. The 1971/72 wheels were used thru 1977. Only black was available after 1973. 1971/77: D4TZ-3600-A. The same wheel was also used on 1975/77 Econolines, 1974/77 Bronco's.

If your looking to swap to an aftermarket wheel, any steering wheel by Grant will fit. The power steering parts can be had from a 68 to 70 something F-100 or F-250. Make sure to grab the power steering pump, brackets, and harmonic balancer pulley as well. Take pictures before you pull them off so you know how they are supposed to look installed rather then guessing down the road if at all possible. Don't bother trying to reuse the hoses though. Its worth the extra cost of new in comparison to cleaning up transmission fluid from under the hood and engine. I pulled the power steering out a 68 F-250 for the 66 F-100 I am working on and it was a direct bolt in.

Thanks, I will start to search around here for a parts truck that I can get those parts from.

On the steering wheel, will the turn signal arm and all function like it should and the steering wheel make contact with the turn signal cam?

EDIT >>> OP has a 351W = The pump brackets, pulleys and vibration damper will not work from any 1968/79 F Series truck.

The 351W's used in cars 1969/72 will have the pump, brackets, pulleys only. Vibration damper: 1970/72 351W (NOT 1969). The hoses will have to be fabbed.

The steering parts/box from 1968/72 F100/250 360/390's can be used.

Yes to both. Just make sure to take the turn signal cancel cam off the original wheel. It clips on the bottom of the wheel. There is a wide copper plate that the horn brush makes contact with. I will say that the horn botton is kind of crappy though if you get the lowest price one.

Oh ok, well the steering wheel issue won't be a problem then.

On the power steering I have to basically piece it together alittle differently but would the pulley on my 351 windsor work as it sits? It has 2 extra spots for a belt to go. Also does it matter that my truck used to be a 3speed on the column that is no longer used?

Yes, the lower pulley should work just fine. The 351W engine wasn't available in F Series trucks till 1980. Passenger cars like LTD's, Galaxies and Fairlane/Torinos used 351W's from 1969, the first year for the engine. These cars also came with 302's, 351C's (1970), 390's, 400's (1971) and 429's, so finding a 351W may be difficult. You might be able to use the brackets from a 302 (cars 1968/72, F100's 1969/72), but swaps are not my forte (I HATE swaps).

Make sure you record what the parts come from that you use. This is the reason I hate swaps. Ppl make changes, don't record what the parts came from, then are unable to find the parts when something breaks. Next stop: a dealers parts counter. The usual opening remarks are: "Can you please help me, I don't know what these parts are from."

lol, yeah I am not a big fan of swaps either to be honest but this one I did not do. It was this way when I bought it but the engine has less than 50 miles on a rebuilt motor so just sticking with it.

So I can get the power steering box from any 68-72 F Series but I have to get the pump & brackets from a 69-72 car but have to figure out what engine might have the same brackets.

Thanks,
Mike

The pumps are the same 1965/72 car and truck (except cars with 429 engines). The brackets from a car will work, but as I stated above, you might be able to use the brackets from a 1969/72 car or F100 with a 302 engine. Once you leave the engine, the parts from 1968/72 F100/250's will work.

FYI: Some 1968/69 F100/250's used Bendix P/S, you'd be better off to go with the Ford system. Bendix gear box seal kits are obsolete and are hard to find. The Ford box uses the same seal kits the cars used (1965 into the 1990's).

Thanks, I appreciate the help.

I did find this pump with brackets. It doesn't say what year(s) it came from but I assume it should work because it says its for a 351 Windsor motor.

So with that part all I need it some custom lines and the power steering box?

Mike

351W = used in Econolines from 1975. The steering was by Sag-a-Now (Saginaw). I can't tell from the pic what that pump is. Mebbe someone else will know. Better ask the seller what it's from.

I've seen posts about converting to Saginaw P/S pumps and gearboxes, but AFAIK, the Econoline steering linkage will not work on a F Series truck.
