Here are a few pictures of the 390 engine for the 1966 F-100 Custom Cab I am working on. So far it is going ok. I haven't put the oil pan on in case it doesn't fully clear the front clip when I go to put it in. So far the project is progressing smoothly with a few minor details that need to be addressed before I drop the engine in. The engine compartment still needs to be wet sanded, firewall holes filled, and wiring harness' wrapped and tied down.
This is what I started with.
And what I have done so far.

Nice...but as original, 1960/67 engines were black. Ford Blue wasn't used on engines till 1968.
The valve covers seem odd looking, not what was used in 1965/67. Maybe it's the angle of the pics.
The downward pointing oil filter may hit the crossmember. You may have to use a shorter oil filter = FL-300, or change the adapter to a 45 degree type.
Sorry to be a PITA, but I'm a stickler for originality.

The oil filler adapter was what was in the truck with a stock sized filter on it. I compared that to the car one and that definately wont fit. The engine color is what he wanted verse the light Ford blue that was on the old engine. The valve covers actually say "THUNDERBIRD". Since he wants power steering/brakes and an automatic trans in I think original is out the window.
Here is what was in it.

1966 was the first year power steering was offered as an option (same pump as 1965/72 cars). Power brakes were available too. The oil filter adapter (as original) on my 65 F100 angles at 45 degrees. The problem with the down pointing oil filters is = the FE left motor mounts tend to break, and when that happens, the filter could hit the crossmember.
Valve covers: 1961/64 Thunderbird. Prolly what the engine is. Separate oil fill pipe on right side of engine, no provision for oil caps on valve covers. Same covers were used on 390 1961/64 Galaxies. The 352 covers were marked F O R D. The Merc covers were plain, except on Marauders...they said: M E R C U R Y. The 406/427 covers were either painted or chrome, and said F O R D.
1965/67 FE valve covers are wedge shaped, have provisions for oil caps, and have no lettering. The 1968 and later wedge shaped valve covers say: Powered by Ford.
1965/76 FE's do not have a separate oil fill tube.
