what voltage

I just purchased a 39 Ford 1-1/2 ton tow truck. It was used until 1975 and always garaged. How can I tell if it is 6 volt or maybe converted to 12v?

If it still has a battery, check the number of cells, 3 cells=6 volt, 6 cell=12 If not remove a headlight bulb and check the voltage, it should be indicated on it. Also pull a tail light bulb and check the bulb number, 12 volt is 1034,1157. 6 volt I think is 1156. Also check the ground wire to the battery, They probably had positive ground for 6 volt. 12 volt had negative ground. Thats the best I can do. Someone else might have more.

The 1156 bulb is a single filament 12 volt bulb (brake light only -- or is it tail light only?) the 1157 is a 2 filament bulb (brake and tail lights).

If only it had a battery in it, that would have been too easy. I didn't think to check a headlight bulb. Thanks

Soule46, your right, on the 1156 being a single element probably that one is used for a back up light, Maybe I'm thinking of a 1154 for 6 volt. Its been quite a while that I've seen one.

I believe that the 1156 is a single filament 12 volt bulb. I know that the 1157 is a double filament 12 volt bulb.
