i just found out today that my pup has parvo. he got sick saturday night and yesterday was not a good day. this morning i took him to the vet and the test came back positive and he has to be in the hospital for 3-5 days. he will be pumped full of iv fluids and whatever else they need to do.
he is about 1 year old and is a yellow lab/golden retreiver mix. i got him back in october and he weighted less then 15 pounds and today he weighted 71 lbs.
i am sure that this has happened to others so what should i do to help him. and what do i have to do to the house (cleaning wise) before he comes home?
We have saved several from Parvo by giving them Pepto Bizmo to coat there stomach. Making sure we got lots of water down them. It's messy but worked. Got this info from a Vet by phone as we have none in the area.
Parvo is in the ground where ever the pet got it. And will be in the ground where ever it got sick or went poop. It takes years for it to dissipate. I suggest that ya get all yer pets there shots and keep up on them. We hope the Pup come out Ok.
my lab had parvo when he was about 6 months old. he pulled through alirght, basically just visits at the vets to keep his spirits up- hes in a strange place with people he doesnt know- the vets noticed a big difference in how mine acted while i was around. youll need to change where you keep him kennaled, if thats what you do. other than that, theres not a whole lot you can do other than follow what the vet says and keep him up on his shots. also if you have other animals youll want them vaccinated.
last night i went out and saw him before they closed and he looked real lonely and lost laying in his kennel at the vet. and he was getting pumped full of fluids, he also had one of the things on his head that keep him from scratching his head. which i had to laugh at him for. but i could not get close to him because the virus is spread so easily. he is in the "icu" with two others dogs with parvo.
he is doing alot better today. he did not throw up or go to the bathroom in his kennel last night. the vet said he will have to stay the night again tonight but he could come home tomorrow if he eats food.
he is the only pet i have and we live the life of two bacholers. so the house is kind of quiet without him here.
Glad to hear he is going to be alright. He will be as glad to be home as you will to have him. Make sure he gets lots of rest and builds up his strength again.
Had to put my buddy down in 98. haven't been able to let one get close since. Yer about bringing tears ta my eyes thinking about it Bud.
There was a time not to long ago when even Vets couldn't cure Parvo.
i went out and saw him tonight and he looked alot better then yesterday. the doctors said that he is not very happy about being pinned up, and he is showing his teeth and grouling at them whenever they get close to him or the other dogs in there with parvo. he is one of three in there right now.
i will try and figure out how to hook my camera up to my computer (since they are both getting alittle old) and post some pictures of him to show all of you what he looks like.
