I love how before he did it he moved it to a private frequency...of course he did it because doing that on the actual frequency would be stupid and possibly dangerous, but I'm sure it didn't bother him that it made it a little more private.
62rag, no kidding man I've heard some funny stuff around here flying. I keep a scanner sitting near my computer tuned to the frequency around here and hear interesting stuff all the time.
I can't think of a situation where they would have a private frequency, unless they have aircraft type radios in their facility. Everything we have is very permanent, and monitored continuously. I think that that controller would have been reprimanded for doing that on any FAA radio. I can't see how they could overlook it. I get downgraded on my tape talks(listen to a session of my work and grade it) for saying "United FLIGHT 584" when it should just be "United 584". I got points off for excess verbage, and that was only one word. The most common accidental mis-use is when the pilot or co-pilot will do their speech to the passengers: "Folks we're about an hour out from (destination) the temperature is.......(and so on)." All pilots get a kick out of that. Of course I've also transmitted an entire relief briefing(when one controller takes over from another one) over the air too. It sometimes get interesting..........
I've heard plenty of those...controllers handing everything off to another controller.
I also heard a wonderful little conversation one day when we were making a run back for the airport as thunderstorms moved in from the west, over DFW. ATC had started putting them in holds to fly the ILS's, and a Delta pilot accidentally transmitted over the frequency: "Ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain speaking. The guys down in air traffic control are gonna leave us up here in a holding pattern for a little while due to the weather down on the ground. We'll let you know as soon as we know anything" The controller came back immediately with "for that...I just might let you make a few more laps." There was some snickering in our cockpit and a "good one!" on the frequency followed by a "sorry sir" from the Delta crew.
62rag, you seem to be graded pretty hard. Down here, I don't want to say they're laid back, because that's not the appropriate term, but there are lighthearted moments when everyone's not inbound or outbound of DFW/DAL. At night especially, there are some fun comments, and we've got a ryhming ATCer at one of the local airports.
As for the "private frequency", I know, at least at the airport I fly out of currently, if the ATCer wants to have a word with you, you switch over to another frequency on the ground that's basically just you and him (unless someone else tunes in) where he can tell you whatever. I assume that the guy in the link did the same thing when he told the flight to "switch to me on frequency xxx.xx".
