Well after alot of knuckle smashing and getting greasy.I changed the plugs, wires, fuel filter, threw in some lucas injector cleaner, and had the front end aligned,my last 2 tanks have averaged 22 mpg.Quoating one of our friends on here "im expecting to see jesus standing at a mile marker post sign soon!!!"
never thought my 4.0 auto 4x4 would ever get that kinda mileage! Got one question how can ford say 100,000 miles between plug changes ? I changed mine at 80,000 and they looked like garbage. Truck runs like a brand new one now.think 50,000 is more reasonable for plug changing, anyway we'll see how long it lasts when i get my first fire call and the foot goesto the floor heading to the fire station.
regards all
Steve
Good for you Steve.Wonder if any in group have achieved higher mpg. and what did they use-cold air induction, throttle body spacer, headers or exhaust mods.,computer chip mods.,ect.Most advertise improved economy, but do they really? Have 4.0 SOHC,auto,4x4 and would to improve mpg.
Ed
I have a volant cold air induction, with an AEM dry filter, had oil problems with the maf sensor, a throttle body spacer and a superchips supertuner on it.Also i installed a gibson catback exhaust system, and use mobil 1 in the engine, transfer case, and in the differentials.Think this has helped also greatly!!!
I think you are right on the plugs. Changed mine today @ 48000 mi. Three of the plugs had really wide gaps. The other three looked pretty good. I had some uneven idle, but gone now.
I think I may have my plugs changed when I do the fuel filter. My 04 has almost 42K on it and my mileage has gone down hill really bad the last 3 or 4 thousand miles.
Ford recommends 100k miles / tuneup because it lowers the maintenance cost for those companies that look at total cost of ownership.
I changed my plugs at ~70k and I agree that 100k is probably too much, but I saw no difference in performance, mileage, or how it ran before and after, and I had it on the dyno both before and after, so I can document the 'no change' report. The factory ignition system will run the engine fine at .075" gaps, so wide gaps amazingly really don't hurt. (In fact, when I put in the iridium ones @.035", it didn't idle right, so I had to pull them and open up the gaps to .050" to make it idle right.)

well my 22mpg comes and goes.lol have been on 6 fire and motorvehicle crash calls in the last few days and running with my foot to the floor and lights and siren going it crashed to 11.5 but will say one thing i do love this little truck built solid as a rock!!!
