Question About to buy a ford. need some info

I just found a 99 F-150 XLT. 4x4, ext. cab, 5.4, tow package extra clean, no rust, no dents or scratches, for $7700.00 wich I think is a pretty good price since it's from a dealer.. it's running about 126,000 for mileage right now, how much longer can I expect it to be a good reliable truck? is this thing gonna be runnin smooth once I build it up to about 170,000?? what are the most common problems once they get up around that area in mileage??.. Long detailed answers won't bother me.. gimme everything you can think of.

NO, '99s have a very large inordinate amount of problems. I have no idea why because a lot of them aren't necessarily engine related, that was the major change, but it is over all a lemon year.

Some of the things I can think of off the top of my head are head gaskets leaking, heater hose leaking onto #4 COP, Instrument cluster WILL start to go on and off. '99 was the first year for the electric cluster and there are problems with the connections in the back. Read any '97-'03 F150 site for a few weeks and you will see the pattern.

well, little stuff like that's no big deal..instrument clusters go bad, n anything that holds fluid is bound to leak once in a while... my biggest concern is how much life left in the engine before its dead/needs overhaulin and how much life left in the trans. I appreciate the info though keep um coming guys..

PS. my driving style with this truck will be the occasional trailer pulling, moderate offroading/mudding (im from small town, iowa) but basically just driving and hauling my ATV in the bed.

If it's made it to 126000, it should go 170000 with no problems if maintained well.

Mileage wise I have a 97F-150XLT with 221,000 miles on it. No oil use only problem is IAC.
Sorry as for as problems with the 99 year model I sure someone else will know. I figure at this point after just pulling the plugs I'll get 300,000 or better they looked really good.

I say go for it, it sounds like a pretty good deal, especially from a dealer.

truck is listed below - only problems were/are:

ball joint squeek - $20 fix with grease gun, needle, and some el cheapo grease

odometer goes out/flashes sometimes - easy fix: take inst. cluster out and fix one solder joint

moifold bolt broke - makes some noise mostly at startup - somewhat harder fix but under $500

That's all that I know of. Overall, 84k on 'er and I'm really happy. Great power and the best looking model (imho). Problems are going to happen to ANY vehicle, whether it be a year old or 100 yrs old. I say go for it if you really want it and can afford it.

just remember that every vehicle ever made has had or could have some sort of problem. you can take one truck and it could have not one problem in 100k and an identical model could need new ball joints, have tranny problems, spark plug issues, etc. just note the more common ones on the '99 before you buy. the price tag isn't bad by any means, but i'm sure you can get a little less

If the 99 made it past 60k without major issues, its fine. Most of the 99 issues were from the factory, ie defective head gaskets and the like. Mine kicked the bucket around 40k and I drove it to 80k before it died, and I could have had it running again if I had invested the money into the gasket. If the truck checks out, go for it. Like they said, if its lasted that long its survived the defects and should go well for some time! I loved my 1999, I really miss it compared to the 2002

Drive one just like it with 165,000 miles:

- Look for the passenger side cylinder head oil leak. Mine has it and it was repaired twice under warranty years ago at 30,000 and 40,000. Showed up again at 140,000. Used Bar's Leaks and it seems to have slowed it down....not bad for snake oil.

-Odometer goes in and out. Works when it is cold, goes out when warm. Soldering expanding and contracting I guess?

Other than that...I'm am driving the $#!& out of it. Great truck.

This is a common problem that is addressed very well in this thread. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/196821-odometer-blackout-problem-fixed.html?highlight=blackout
