My rearend in my truck clunks like crazy when you take off from a dead stop. I thought it was a u-joint but found there is some major play in the diff. If I grab the pinion flange, I can rock the pinion side to side like 2 inches. This is with the wheels on the ground and blocked so they can't move. All the slop is in the diff.
-How could this start all of a sudden?
-Could the crush sleave on the pinion have colapsed and caused major tooth clearance at the ring?
-How could this have that much play? I'm scared to remove the diff cover!
If you remove the cover you'll probably find an issue with either the spider gears or the cross shaft. When I rebuilt my 8.8 there was a ton of slop in it and that is where I found it, but mine had about 250k miles on it at the time.
