351 H.O. intake dumb question

351 H.O. intake dumb question
On the bottom of the intake, straight under the carb, there is a bowl like piece of sheet metal spotted on. Just wondering what the purpose of this is. Is there anything in it? I have been in the process of putting heads on this motor ('86 EB) this weekend, and now I wish I had taken a picture of the bottom of the intake. I did stop and take one of the motor tonight when I picked up all the tools. It's in my gallery for the wife's project. If I knew how, I'd post it here. This piece is on my 2 barrel manifold too.

It's a splash shield. It keeps hot oil from the lifters from directly hitting the intake and heating it up. The idea is that the cooler the intake stays, the denser the air charge, and the more power you can make. Actual positive effect is probably minimal but I sure wouldn't mess with it.
